Which baby boy name?

Swedish family background, UK based

Lars (what comes to mind when you hear this? Too boring/old man/posh/cool/tacky etc?)

Oskar (is Oscar too common a name now?)

William (I love traditional names, would love some other suggestions! Worried this is too boring?)

Jakob? (Has this had its day?)

Jolyon (I quite like 'private school' sounding names like this, guilty pleasure, would love some other suggestions!)

Any other suggestions welcome!!

Not really a huge fan of any of them, sorry - Oskar, William and Jakob all very bland to me, and just don't like the other two. How about Axel, Alvin/Elvin, Viggo, Ivar or Milo?

Tucancrossing · 13/01/2021 13:50

Or instead of William, Wilhelm? Nickname could still be Will but with a much less used full name?

Caspianberg · 13/01/2021 13:50

I like Lars best. Not overly used yet a well known name. Easy to spell and pronounce in both countries. Timeless

JemimaTiggywinkle · 13/01/2021 13:53

Lars - cool and Scandi.

Oskar - nice.

Jakob - with that spelling I would assume it would be pronounced “Yak-ub”.. is that the intention? If not I’d go for Jacob.

Jolyon- yes it is very private school.

What about Erik?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/01/2021 13:54

Lars is my favourite

Milo will always be a dog's name to me. Not sure we're cool enough to pull off the Viggo/Axel type names!

My favourites from your list are William and Lars. Oscar and Jacob (albeit different spellings) are very popular and not my personal favourites. Not a huge fan of Jolyon - never sure whether it's Joe-lee-un or Jolly-un.

Haha! That's a good point! I think I only recognise Jolyon because there was one in my (very comprehensive) school. If I didn't know that I might pronounce it Jolly on. Which sounds ridiculous

William for me. Wished I'd used it as a first name for my son, rather than middle, as I really like Will.

I'm not great on the origin of names so may have no Scandi link whatsoever, but Magnus also came to mind?

plg21 · 13/01/2021 14:03

"Private school" names I've heard at matches are Arlo, Laslo, Sebastian and Bertie though a bit much for me!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/01/2021 14:10

What about Kasper/Kaspar

bourbonne · 13/01/2021 14:11

Lars sounds to me like a tall, handsome Scandi dreamboat! I love it but then I'm always surprised when I hear it spoken and it's "Larzh". Could that be a pain? Or would you pronounce it as it looks in English, "Larz"?

Octoblockswim12345678swim · 13/01/2021 14:20

There's a Lars in Go Jetters! Your baby boy might watch it in a few years, he's a nice character and it's a cool name. William and Jakob also lovely. Jolyon is a bit Forsyte Saga for me, I prefer the other timeless names on your list.

FolkAreWeird · 13/01/2021 14:20

Lars is great! Very cool and ages well.

KirstenBlest · 13/01/2021 15:18

Willem instead of William?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/01/2021 21:45

Lars - is really cool, if I had Scandi heritage I'd love to use it.
Oskar - Oscar is very popular so there will be spelling confusion
William - lovely, so classic (similar names would be Alexander, Henry, Edward, Charles, Thomas and James)
Jakob - again Jacob is popular so spelling will be an issue in the UK
Jolyon - a bit much for me, maybe Sebastian, Maxim(ilian) or Tristan instead?

Other names popular/well known in Scandinavia that I love are Erik, Mads, Leif, Stellan, Mathias, Elias and Soren

Iamneverfull · 13/01/2021 22:39

Lars

MrsEricBana · 13/01/2021 22:41

Definitely Lars!

scrivette · 13/01/2021 23:03

Another vote for Lars.

tatutata · 13/01/2021 23:05

We went for Konrad. Otherwise I like Jakob.

MercyBodle · 13/01/2021 23:49

Lars, Oskar and William are all great. Popularity with strong traditional names is not an issue for me. Jakob is okay. I'm not keen on Jolyon - maybe it's the jolly sound at the beginning.

Chilldonaldchill · 14/01/2021 09:00

Lars - I like this.

Oskar - I like this too. It's popular but not crazily so. I know one (spelt Oscar) who has a Swedish mother and British father

William - this is my favourite of the traditional names. I like Edward too.

Jakob? - I would pronounce this Yack - ub. Is this how you intend it? I don't dislike it (or Jacob) but I don't love it.

Jolyon - this isn't my favourite of those type of names. I prefer Sebastian, Hugo, Benedict, Piers, Rufus, Lucien.
