Me and DH are expecting a DD and are torn on names. We originally were quite certain with Briseis but after reading a book that i got recommended and doing some research myself we now aren't certain! Here is our names list now

Briseis
Thetis
Artemis

Would really appreciate any help of similar names and ideas of which to choose! (Also any books focused on ancient greece!)

How about Athene/Athena?

I've not heard of the names listed and have only heard of Artemis as male.

glassacorn · 13/01/2021 14:49

Love the Greek mythological slant! Artemis is most commonly a female name (for the goddess) but it's gained popularity with boys of late.

What about...
Cassandra
Calliope
Andromeda
Persephone
Clio
Ambrosia
Astraea
Megaera
Xanthe

Always nice to know the story behind them too!

glassacorn · 13/01/2021 14:50

Also - have you got a favourite constellation? Most have Greek names, making it a lovely link!

Pukkatea · 13/01/2021 15:46

Hera, Helen, Daphne, Hestia, Phoebe, Selene, Gaia.

Out of your list, I like Briseis the most.

Pukkatea · 13/01/2021 15:47

Oh and Pandora!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 13/01/2021 15:53

I love Andromeda!! Briseis, I'm not too sure off, I think some people might pronounce it Bris-aay-us, which reminds me of Bris, the Jewish ceremony where baby boys get circumcised.

But I'm assuming its Bri-say-us, which I think is nice. Hestia and Gaia are lovley too, but Andromeda is my favourite!

Firebird83 · 13/01/2021 18:27

I like Artemis the best. Briseis reminds me of Bris too.

Leo674 · 13/01/2021 18:29

I do like Briseis but her true story is quite sad and traumatic. She would also have to spell it out whenever she was giving her name at work, doctors, banks etc.
A Thousand Ships is a really amazing book telling the Trojan war from the perspective of Greek, Trojan and Amazonian women and there are some great names in there, would highly recommend.
I love Penelope, Persephone and Athena

Leo674 · 13/01/2021 18:29

Should also the book covers goddesses and demi goddesses too!

StillGoingToWork · 13/01/2021 18:33

Artemis. Artie, as a nn. I haven't come across the other two. But for a boy, not a girl.

Love the pp's suggestions.

crabette · 13/01/2021 19:04

Came across Elysia lately and thought it was lovely!

babasaclover · 13/01/2021 19:13

They sound like dog names, beware of giving a name that the child will spend their whole life correcting people in spelling

ame88 · 13/01/2021 19:15

The one I would go for is Thetis - makes me think of FETUS

Prianiki · 13/01/2021 19:39

I know very little about Greek mythology, so take my opinion for what it's worth (i.e. very little).

Thetis sounds very mathematical to me. Not necessarily a bad thing, but my mind instantly went trigonometry. Grin Looking up the origin, I'm wondering if Nereida might be a more romantic option.

I love Artemis. Recognisable and memorable.

RubyFakeLips · 13/01/2021 20:00

Artemis is definitely my favourite.

I prefer Zadie, Ismene, Antigone and Atlanta.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/01/2021 20:46

Artemis is lovely - a bit brave/uncommon in the UK, but well known by most people, so fairly simple to say and spell. Of your options it would easily be my pick.

I understand your love of Greek names but I think some are easier on kids than others - Athena, Maia, Hera, Selene, Thalia, Larissa, Theia, Xanthe, Ianthe and Gaia all seem quite useable and are nice imo. I love Persephone, Cassiopeia, Ariadne, Ismene, Andromeda and Galatea too but those are a bit more unusual sounding.

DramaAlpaca · 13/01/2021 23:16

Artemis is fine for a girl, it's too feminine for a boy.

I don't like the other two, there are much nicer names in that genre.

Nancydrawn · 13/01/2021 23:28

Briseis does not have one of my favorite stories in Greek mythology. I'd prefer to pick a woman with power, not one without.

cloudchaos · 13/01/2021 23:32

Hermione?

whatausername · 14/01/2021 13:25

Artemis! 100%

PoodleMoth · 14/01/2021 20:00

Love them all! Artemis was on on my list but in the end we went for a different Greek name. I didn't worry about negative associations to do with myths and in real life only 1 person has every mentioned the myth associated with her name

Oneandabean · 16/01/2021 18:21

I know a little girl called Artemis, goes by arty. It’s a beautiful name, I love it. Not keen on the others.
