Baby girl shortlist - and what else would you add?

My baby girl is due soon and we are stuck on names. Thoughts on our current shortlist? What else might we like? Surname is Shaw.

Eloise (we love this name but wonder is the S sounds are too close together when the surname is said too).

Eliza (love this but is it really a nickname for Elizabeth?)

Imogen (big fans of this one but a bit put off that it doesn’t have a proper meaning and is thought to have been a ‘typo’ in Shakespeare instead of Innogen - quite like Innogen though!).

Persephone (possibly pretentious.... is Percy a likely nickname? Hate that!)

Naomi (like this)

Audrey (wouldn’t like her being called Odd!)

Anything else?

I would stick with Eliza.

Bluesername · 10/01/2021 09:11

I like Naomi best. Elizabeth Shaw with nickname Eliza would also be nice. Naomi Elizabeth?

Sophia
Caroline
Natalie
Annabel
Louisa
Emilia
Felicity

cafedesreves · 10/01/2021 09:12

Eliza!

Firebird83 · 10/01/2021 09:24

Eliza Shaw sounds good.

Don’t go with Elizabeth Shaw though, it’s a brand of chocolates!

DotDotDotDotDot · 10/01/2021 09:49

I love Eliza it’s a fab name and definitely a name in its own right. I also like Naomi from your list and think it flows better with your surname compared to Eloise.

VenusClapTrap · 10/01/2021 09:57

I have an Audrey so I’m biased. Nobody has ever called her Odd! We generally use it in full, although sometimes she gets Aud, Auds and Auda.

OnlyToWin · 10/01/2021 10:01

I think Imogen Shaw sounds best because it does not roll into your surname like some of the others do.

sleepingfox · 10/01/2021 10:02

Eliza sounds lovely with your surname. I like Persephone too, but I’d have the same concerns you mentioned.

My first thoughts with your surname were Lydia, Beatrix, Juliet, and Helena.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 10/01/2021 10:03

I like Naomi best

India
Elsie
Margo
Sienna
Allegra
Penelope
Beatrix
Edith
Juliet
Lydia
Thea
Saskia

Dawnlassie · 10/01/2021 10:04

Persephone sounds like a type of packaging material.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/01/2021 10:06

Eloise and Naomi

MercyBodle · 10/01/2021 10:09

You're overthinking some of these. Eliza has been an established name on its own for at least 3 centuries. All names started somewhere - Eliza as a short form for Elizabeth, Imogen as a variation in a script about 5 centuries ago. Both have such long and established form that the feeling you have of them not being somehow genuine or okay as names is not based in the reality of how language works!

Eliza, Imogen and Persephone (pretentiousness? If you want to use it, use it.) are all great and all work well with your surname.

Audrey repeats the 'or' sound of surname too much for me, but to other ears it may be okay.

Eloise is a bit awkward with Shaw. I don't like Naomi.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/01/2021 10:13

Eliza is gorgeous and is a name in its own right. It doesn't have to be short for Elizabeth.

Juliet Shaw
Penelope Shaw
Nancy Shaw
Louisa Shaw
Amelia Shaw
Miriam Shaw
Isabelle Shaw
Jessica Shaw
Hannah Shaw
Mabel Shaw

MrsPtoB · 10/01/2021 10:14

I had considered Eliza for our little girl due in March until someone pointed out to me she might get called Iza which totally put me off.

We are now thinking of the name Isla :).

ParisJeTAime · 10/01/2021 10:15

I love your list!

Think I like every name on there.

Other ideas;

Alexandra
Louisa
Saskia
Rebecca
Ophelia
Nancy
Anita

Chillypenguin · 10/01/2021 10:17

I actually know an Eliza Shaw and she’s about 30 so it’s a good traditional name.

Also:
Nell
Eleanor
Phoebe
Cleo
Lily
Thea
Sadie
Sienna

polkadotpixie · 10/01/2021 10:20

Eloise - Nice enough but a bit frilly

Eliza - Love this! Not Elizabeth Shaw though, that's a brand of chocolate mints

Imogen - Not keen, it's just a bit wet

Persephone - I had a friend called Persephone at uni, she was always known as Percy so if you hate that I'd probably avoid

Naomi - Would it be pronounced Nay-omi or Ny-omi? Also, I am incapable of spelling it correctly for some reason! It's not horrible though

Audrey - Not keen, especially with Shaw. Reminds me of Audrey from Coronation St, sorry! Aubree is much nicer

galaxy9 · 10/01/2021 10:56

Definitely Eliza, sounds really classic and beautiful.

I have an Eliza in my family and I've never heard this!
Thisisbananas3 · 10/01/2021 11:25

Naomi my favourite out of that list.

I have a feeling Eliza is about to become a really popular name, I know 3 born since July last year! (Not saying a popular name is a bad thing, I know it puts some people off)

MrsPtoB · 10/01/2021 11:30

That's great, perhaps it could be the name Iza (Isa) is more well known in Glasgow or perhaps it could be the case whoever told me this was wrong but it personally put me off either way.

KirstenBlest · 10/01/2021 11:59

Eloise doesn't flow nicely with the surname, and she'll probably end up being Ellie. Not keen on the name - it looks pretty but is a bit clumsy to say. Lois or Louisa might be alternatives.

Eliza flows much better. You could use Elizabeth on the BC, but with the surname it is a brand name.

Imogen - fine, but not keen on Immy. Don't worry about Innogen.

Persephone - nice but too long and a bit try-hard. Could be Sephy.

Naomi (like this) - too many different ways people say it.

Audrey (wouldn’t like her being called Odd!) - Audrey Roberts. I wouldn't.

partyatthepalace · 10/01/2021 12:10
  • Eliza, love - would call her Elizabeth as full name (I don't think you need to worry about chocolates) but PP is right - it is popular. (Isa/Iza is specifically Scottish nn - think unlikely elsewhere).
  • Eloise - I really like - lot of El names about tho this less usual. Don't think the s s is an issue.
  • Like Persephone a lot! I think Sephie or Fi are more likely nns, tho I actually think Percy is cute for a girl
(Imogen I think is OK, don't like Naomi or Audrey much)

Others -
Marianne
Eleanor nn Nell - both sound great with Shaw
Rosanna
Frances
Miranda
Lucinda
Madeleine
Estella
Adela
Adelaide
Fenella
Annabel
Elsbeth
Katharine nn Kate
Diana
Georgina
Helena
Ismene (Is-may-nee)
Jane
Felicity
Jean

Eliza is good.
