Two middle names

What are your thoughts on giving a baby two middle names? My first child only has one but I rather wish I had also given him my maiden name too as a second middle name. I'm now expecting my second child and wondering whether to give her two middle names. Our chosen names for her are quite long (both 8 letters) so I'm wondering if it's a bad idea, particularly as the rest of us just have the one middle name.

We did exactly as you have said in your post. Our 1st has my maiden name making 2
middle names, so felt we needed to give dd 2 middle names as well. Ds's are short 4,6&4 letters, dd has 6,7&9...she'll hate us when she has to fill forms in!

DS1 has 2 middle names (as does his dad).
DS2 and I only have 1.

I think completing forms a will be a pain but otherwise go for it. Unless you give her both surnames rather than yours as just a middle name.

I have two middle names; Claire & Louise, and I really like it! Although it takes longer to fill out some forms, I wouldn't not want to have both. I plan on giving my future children two middle names too probably.

Two middle names is fine of course.

I'd generally advise giving all your children the same number of names but only because I have one and my sibling has two. I've never got over it Wink Grin

DS1 has one middle name, DS2 has two. It was mainly for a boring reason to do with initials.
It has never been an issue between them (unlike many other things!) or any sort of problem.

partyatthepalace · 08/01/2021 00:18

Fine. I have two, it’s quite common.

BGDino · 24/01/2021 19:52

I have two, my DD does too (one English and one Chinese).

I have one, DH has two (his dad and grandad's names) I want our child to have our mums' / dads' names as middle names.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/01/2021 20:52

While I actually like 2 middle names (especially when they are family names), in this case I would say I wouldn't personally. Partially because your first child would have a different number of names to your second (although this doesn't seem to bother my own siblings), but mainly because you say the names are long. I have 2 fairly short middle names and a short first name and surname and I still occasionally have to make my writing smaller to fit all four names on forms - it would be a pain if they were long too!

Changethetoner · 24/01/2021 20:55

We gave our DC three middle names. One is my maiden name.

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2021 21:09

I have two.
DD has two.
I've never really given it much thought, to be honest.
Her DBs have one middle name each. My brothers too. I never even gave that a second thought either.
Go with it. Don't overthink it.

Equimum · 25/01/2021 20:13

I have middle names but neither of my older brother do. I don’t think anyone ever felt it unfair.

My one word of caution, though? Would be the risk of her taking a double-barrel surname on marriage. I wanted to take DHs surname, but now have a ridiculously long name, despite my first and one of my middle names only being relatively short.

89redballoons · 25/01/2021 22:55

I have my mum's maiden name as a middle name. My name is pretty long, even more so now I've changed my surname to my husband's which is 3 syllables!

I really like my name and I can't remember the last time I had to fill out a paper form which I could run out of space on. Everything's online now which seems to make it less of an issue. On all my bank accounts and stuff I'm just "Forename, initial, initial, surname".

So I'd say go for it Smile

Our children have 2 middlenames each only issue with it is often forms are not long enough to wrote all 3 forenames/middlenames

stormelf · 26/01/2021 10:09

Both my children have two middle names they both have a first middle name named after a grandparent and then my maiden name as a second middle name. If we have a third we will do the same. When I say their full names it does sound like they have two surnames
