Vinnie for a girl

So me and my partner both absolutely love the name Vinnie. Originally we were both dead cert if we was having a boy we would call them vincent. But when we found out we were having a girl we settled on the name emma but neither of us was really that in love with it. A month or so ago my other half turned round and said what about Vinnie for a girl. We both agreed we liked it so much more than Emma but I can't decide whether to just go for it and call her Vinnie or whether to give her a more 'formal' name on her birth cert.
I've been trawling the net, neither of us like lavinia, lavina, lovina, alvina, elvina, davina. I quite like vivenne but he doesn't.

Any other suggestions and thoughts on Vinnie in its own right welcome 😊

I know female Vinnies- it’s lovely.
What about Evangeline or as a pp has suggested Sylvie, which is beautiful?

DacwMamYnDwad · 07/01/2021 09:52

Lavinia nn Vinnie?
Vanessa nn Vinnie?

MarvEll · 07/01/2021 09:54

I love Vinnie! I'm going to add that onto my suggestion list. We're also wondering about just using a nickname (Maddie) as we don't love the full name versions.
I think I've decided names are so diverse these days, it's probably not going to matter who's got a 'proper' long name and who doesn't.
My mum said, if you can imagine them being governor of the bank of england (or similar serious job) with that name, it'll be fine 😂

pantherrose · 07/01/2021 10:04

I had a great aunt Alvina , which shortens very well to either Allie or Vinnie. Probably a bit risky for “Alvina Vagina” taunts later on though!

Amidone · 07/01/2021 10:12

Could be a shortening of Vincenza I guess but it would always strike me as being an overtly masculine name simply because it's not often used for both genders, unlike Bobbie, Frankie, Billy etc - and they're quite rare too.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2021 10:12

Don't. I met a girl called Aiden, we all felt sorry for her that we all immediately assumed she was a he. She's going to spend her life explaining it.

Champy87 · 07/01/2021 10:14

FWIW I much prefer Vinnie as a girls name. I agree Vinnie on a boy makes me think of Vinnie Jones. Vinnie on a girl falls with the Frankie, Billy etc that are very much unisex today.

Agree with PP, so what if people assume she is a boy. Men are favoured in job applications statistically so you may be giving her an unexpected advantage. Also she will be memorable if someone calls her for an interview and they were expecting a boy.

@MarvEll
Im very cautious with alot of names now as some of them are very 'cutesy' and I don't see how they can grow with the child. I have a friend called Verity who has always gone as vee, my nana uses vee as a nickname too. My other half is very much in favour of no longer name just Vinnie and said she could use either Vee or Vi for a more 'grown up' option. It actually means elf in old english. My older daughters name (Faye) means fairy. I kind of think the similarity between meanings is quite sweet.

Veronica with Vinnie as a nn?

Bettieboogie · 07/01/2021 10:19

@Champy87
Very valid points! It's kind of funny because Im a plumbing and heating engineer and work in a very much male dominated industry and I tend to fair well as people spot me in amongst others because they aren't expecting to see a female in this line of work. Been in the trade 17yrs now and it is changing, more women are joining trades 💪🏻
Having an edge pays off sometimes :)

My names Lee, I'm a girl obviously but my parents spelled it the boys way!!! I'm always getting mistaken as a man on paper 😂😂 doesn't really bother me, my middle name is Anne :) just to make it more confusing!!!

@Amidone
Love love love frankie and Bobbie for girls!! I'm obsessed with "boys" names for girls

FamilyOfAliens · 07/01/2021 10:21

Baby would likely always be called Vinnie though especially by daddy.

If he’s decided he’s going to call his daughter Vinnie regardless of what her full name on the BC is, surely your best bet is to call her Vinnie on the BC?

Then you can stop trying to extrapolate the nickname Vinnie from names that are nothing like it.

WiseOwlRelaxing · 07/01/2021 10:22

@pinkyredrose

Veronica with Vinnie as a nn?
best idea.

I was going to suggest Vivienne

It's kind of odd for a girl but I like it a lot for a boy.

WiseOwlRelaxing · 07/01/2021 10:25

Love the suggestion of Winnie!

Would your partner accept Winnie!?

She sounds a bit bossy about this.

GAW19 · 07/01/2021 10:26

Vinnie is beautiful op!
I love typical 'male' names for girls, think it can work really well

Libertybells1 · 07/01/2021 10:30

I know you said you're avoiding Irish names but I have a friend nicknamed Vinnie and her name is Béibhinn (pronounced like Bayveen, although you can also pronounce it Bayvin, or Bevvin if you remove the first 'i' and the fada over the 'e'). Really suits her but not ideal if you're in the UK I suppose, as people will mangle the pronunciation.

Bettieboogie · 07/01/2021 10:32

@WiseOwlRelaxing Winnie can't be used. It's already been used by a close family member. But an equally beautiful name 😊

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/01/2021 10:34

She won't thank you for it.

Bettieboogie · 07/01/2021 10:35

@WiseOwlRelaxing
Also seriously thinking about Veronica but it is also my Nanas name.
My aunty named my cousin after my dad and he used to get so confused my dad had the same name as him when he was little and got stuck with being called little guy rather than just guy. He's still little guy to the family even now hes in his 20's.

There is an actress called Vinny Dhillon.

Bettieboogie · 07/01/2021 10:37

@Libertybells1
We are in england. So the pronunciation will be hard work. My youngest brother is called Eoghan and people struggled alot even with that name and it's not even that unheard of.
I adore alot of irish names but dont want to inflict a lifetime of bad pronunciation and misspelling on them 🙈

Vinnie always makes me think of vindictive!
I did read a (Judy Blume?) book once where a girl was named after her uncle Vinnie, they called her Vincenza (which pronounced vin-chen-za as it’s Italian) but nicknamed her Vicky to make it more feminine anyway.

Bettieboogie · 07/01/2021 10:40

@FamilyOfAliens
I think if anything this post is swaying me to just throw caution to the wind. The idea of a more formal name mostly comes from wanting to please older relatives

OP posts:
Paperyfish · 07/01/2021 10:42

Vincenza- I think that’s a name ( sorry home schooling and not read through in detail)

HelebethH · 07/01/2021 10:42

I used to work with a girl called Vina pronounced Veena. Her family nickname was Vinnie
