I like matilda...

namegame10 · 02/01/2021 14:51

I have to say, I don't like Maisie, sorry. I find it very twee and cute sounding which may not date and grow well with time. Matilda is better I think.

I like Rowan. It's becoming increasingly popular, if that is something you may be concerned about. Robin is also nice along with Rory, Reuben. R's seem to have boomed.

Doublechins · 02/01/2021 14:55

I love Matilda. Don't like Maisie but that's because I know one and she's annoying

Baileysoncereal · 02/01/2021 15:05

All 4 are nice names
But I don’t feel like the pairings flow, or are easy to say together so I wouldn’t put the middle names with those first names.

They’re all very popular too if that’s something you care about.

I think Matilda and Rowan are the two I would pick out, and then choose different middle names

I think Matilda is quite long though, so I would only put a one syllable name with it, Matilda grace
Matilda Pearl
Matilda rose
Matilda faith
Matilda Beth

If you like Maisie with a 3 syllable name after
How about
Maisie Penelope
Maisie Aurora
Maisie isadora

Which I think are a bit less jarring without the alliteration

Rowan and Finlay are lovely but quite ‘light’ names IMO and I think a stronger name would work better with them and compliment them more

Rowan James
Rowan Isaac
Rowan Alexander

Finley Remus / Remus Finley
Finley Charles / Charles Finley

I don't really think middle names matter much (and we can't really tell if they flow without knowing your surname). But Rowan is lovely, and Matilda is a nice classic too. I'm not keen on Maisie (too cutesy nickname) or Finlay (too surname trendy) but that's just personal taste.

All your names are quite popular- is popularity a factor for you?

Maisie is nice, seems to have peaked in the charts quite a few years ago (got to its highest point of number 14 in 2010) and has now sat around the number 40 spot for the past few years, so it isn't about to boom and would be a good time to pick the name. Matilda is similar and also seemed to peak a few years ago (in 2015) if you look at the graphs and has been falling since. I like all the nickname options

Finlay is nice but I think it might get misspelt as Finley sometimes so depends if that bothers you. Finley has also now peaked in the charts and has been sitting around the number 20-30 spot for the past 10 years so would be a good time to pick the name however it is spelt.
Rowan is my baby girls' name. I still like it but to be honest if I'd realised how popular it's become at the same time as very similar sounding Roman with an M (which is the fastest rising boy name) I wouldn't have used it. I do get asked "is the middle letter an M, N, W or H?" and that gets me down a bit as people just blend the name with so many others, plus I hate the nickname Row that is already being used by accident when I've explained I don't like it. One thing to mention is that it's rocketed up the charts for both girls and boys in America so could reach a tipping point there where it only gets used as a girl name, like in Scotland where it's a girl name. It's has a nice meaning though, is the name of a small tree with flowers or berries. Feels feminine to me but is unisex.

Whatsyourflava · 02/01/2021 20:27

Your girl names are really great, I'd pick Matilda.
Rowan I prefer for a girl but I'd avoid it anyway as RoMan and Rowan are getting too popular and trendy. Finlay is nice and much prefer nickname Fin to the nickname Row ...a boat.

Cindy87 · 02/01/2021 20:29

Enjoying the Matilda love, I have a Matilda Lily!

NeonSparkle · 02/01/2021 20:34

I really dislike Maisie but I do quite like Matilda.
I really like Roman though

NeonSparkle · 02/01/2021 20:34

Sorry autocorrect I meant *Rowan

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2021 20:36

Matilda is lovely, I've always liked it.

I don't like Maisie, it's too cutesy for me.

Rowan is OK, but I prefer it on a girl. I do like Finlay.

BackforGood · 02/01/2021 20:45

I quite like Matilda.
Maisie - fine, I don't dislike it, but if you were asking which I prefer, I like Matilda better. I do tend to like names that give you options for using a fuller name or shorter versions.

I'm not that keen on the boys names personally, but prefer Finley to Rowan.

BackforGood · 02/01/2021 20:46

Oh - I've changed the spelling.
Sorry. Though that might be something to consider.

FluffyEggsontoast · 02/01/2021 20:54

Maisie 7/10 lovely name
Matilda 8.5/10 love it and great nicknames, only negative is it's fairly popular but the various nicknames make it feel much less so.
Rowan 4/10 much prefer for a girl but even then too many baby Roman and Rowan's about, it makes my head spin (also Rohan, Rory, Ronnie)
Finlay 7/10 nice name and love Fin as shortening.
