Frederico or Frederick

Finally narrowing down names with the final two being Frederick or Sebastian. But with Sebastian initials would be same as DD. Partner is European and where he's from its Federico (not Frederick). Our son would be Fred or Freddie and I'm not European. What's your thoughts on Frederico? I'm still warming to it...

I have the anglicised one. His full name is rarely used except in exams and he is always known by the shortened version.

Does DD have a European sounding name? I think if she does, I’d go with Federico (not fRederico) but if she has an “English” name I’d go with Frederick.

Both Frederick and Sebastian are lovely name choices btw, they were on our shortlist too.

Do you mean Federico or Frederico? It seems a bit odd to pick a name from a completely different country- eg Portugal, when your DH is Italian.

sandandso · 30/12/2020 14:16

Are you saying you'd use "Frederico" instead of Federico as a sort of compromise mash-up that would produce the nickname Freddie?

I really like Federico but think it would be a pain in the UK. And everyone would stick an extra R in it anyway. So I'd go with Frederick. His dad can still call him Federico as a pet name.

Sorry I meant Frederico or Frederick. DH is Portuguese and DDs name is Sofia

I’d go for the European version, so honour their ancestry especially if being brought up in the UK or away from their fathers land, so to speak!

daisypond · 30/12/2020 14:41

I would definitely go with Frederico in that case. You can still use Freddie at home, and it goes well with Sofia.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/12/2020 18:03

If your daughter has the European Sofia spelling then I would use Federico rather than Frederick. However if you aren't adding any more children to your family, then I'd be tempted to chose Sebastian instead - I always think same initials are lovely in boy/girl sibsets and the Sebastian spelling is the same in many countries, so might be easier.

QuentinInQuarantino · 30/12/2020 18:05

Neither one thing nor the other. Call him Federico. It's nice!

Exactly this 👌

But that’s from a language and culture which neither parent have as their background. It would be odd.
Firebird83 · 30/12/2020 20:51

Federico but still call him Freddie as a nn

Firebird83 · 30/12/2020 20:52

*Frederico sorry

Thanks very much for all your comments ! So it will be Frederico or Sebastian (but Sebastian would have same initials as DD...)

I don’t think it matters at all if your kids have the same initials -

Both your options are nice anyway

PoodleMoth · 31/12/2020 10:13

I really like Frederico and love the nickname Rico
