Alexander / Alex connotations?

Help please!

DS2 arrived very recently and we thought we had our name sorted...Alexander, it was a compromise on both sides as we simply couldn’t agree (we used up our fav “boy name” on DS1!) people inevitably shorten (although didn't expect “Al” which I hate and I do correct people) although I’m not sure I like Alex and I’m worried what connotations the name brings??

Thoughts from teachers would be especially appreciated! Probably hormones...but i’m stressing people might see him as aggressive or something?!

Other names I like: Charlie, George, and Oliver.

It's a fine, strong, classic name. I honestly can't see anything negative about either Alexander or Alex at all.

DaanSaaf · 29/12/2020 20:13

Awesome name. Ask my ds1 Wink

Yennefer19 · 29/12/2020 20:13

I’ve never heard anything negative about the name Alex but if you don’t like Alex you could always have Xander as a nickname?

Carrotcakey · 29/12/2020 20:14

My plan was Alexander nn Alec.
Obviously might not be to your taste but I too don’t like Alex or Al of Xander.

LividLover · 29/12/2020 20:16

Nothing negative, if anything just a bit bland as there’ll be so many of them that it’s not especially distinctive.

Suppose that might be what you’re looking for though, as your other options are all top ten popular types. Is your first child either William or Henry?

baumwolle · 29/12/2020 20:16

I've never heard aggressive connotations to Alex/ander. Al is probably just because he's a baby and it can feel strange referring to a brand new baby with a grown up name

@DramaAlpaca

It's a fine, strong, classic name. I honestly can't see anything negative about either Alexander or Alex at all.
Agreed! It's such a classic, well-used name that it doesn't really have any kind of connotations, either than being vaguely middle/upper class. What about Xander as a nickname if you don't like Alex or Al?
cautiouscovidity · 29/12/2020 20:16

Xander (pronounced Zander) or Sandy if you want to avoid Al / Ali / Ally / Lex

Jemimapuddleduk · 29/12/2020 20:17

Love, love, love it! My brothers name and he is fab. Always go’s by Alex, Al or Alexi depending on who is talking to him.
Xander also works and that’s a super name, DN has that as his first name.
Don’t know any Alexander’s/Alex’s at my children’s school.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 29/12/2020 20:18

I like it. I also like alexander, Alex and Xander. I'd hate Al.

The Alex's I've had in my class bring a smile to my face. Very funny, bit of class clown but with good boundaries, a bit quirky, nice children overall.
Of course that is very subjective and luck of the draw really so I don't know if it really helps.

Superstardjs · 29/12/2020 20:19

Good name, all the Alexs I have taught have been nice kids.
I prefer it much more than any of your other options.

june2007 · 29/12/2020 20:19

Zander/Xander could be a comproomise i really like Alexander and alex as a shorten name.

Whatthebloodyell · 29/12/2020 20:20

Aggressive???? That’s an odd thing to say.

It’s a perfectly nice name with lots of nicknames. I know an Alexander and also an Alex, Ali, Sandy, and Xander. And several Al’s of course!

EssentialHummus · 29/12/2020 20:22

Eck maybe, as a nickname?

I think it's a great name. For various reasons we can't use it but I'd be right in there otherwise!

Sunbird24 · 29/12/2020 20:24

My friend has an Alexander and he’s a beautiful talented boy. I can’t think of any negative connotations!

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 29/12/2020 20:36

Most Alexanders in my area are called Xander. I haven't come across an Alex in a long time.

SpamIAm · 29/12/2020 20:51

Love Alex. Not even the merest hint of aggressive connotations!

Firebird83 · 29/12/2020 21:14

One of my favourite boys names. Can’t think of any negative connotations.

igotosleep · 29/12/2020 21:16

What makes you think it’s aggressive? Genuinely curious as haven’t heard that before

DownToTheSeaAgain · 29/12/2020 21:21

It is a Greek name. Means 'Protector of Men' - maybe that is the aggressive part??

FuckOffDailyFailure · 29/12/2020 21:24

There are loads of nickname options for Alexander! Alex is probably the most common, although I do hear Xander too.

If you want my honest opinion, I'd change it to George, as it can't really be shortened! It's also my favourite name of your list, including Alexander. Although, Alexander is also fine.

ZenNudist · 29/12/2020 21:29

I love it. I have one! It's a strong classic name. There's no others in his yr2 class. The Alex's we know are all ages (We know several, most are Alex, no one goes by Alexander, I know one 50yo Al.)

I prefer it to the other names you mentioned but they are inoffensive. I'm not a big fan of Oliver. My friend has one (he's lovely and smart), he goes by Ol which is a great nn.

Charles is fab but Charlie only so so. George I really don't like but I know many so it's just a matter of taste.

Kanaloa · 29/12/2020 21:31

Wonderful name. Classic and strong, lots of nicknames.

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 29/12/2020 21:58

I have one. We call him Ali at the moment. He calls himself alexander - well, ALander, but he's only one.

I wasn't sure but I really like it now. He will never be a Xander though (serves me right for trying to sneak in a buffy name.) I think you have to name them Xander to get that.

Incacat2 · 29/12/2020 22:10

I've been teaching for 25 years and met no bad kid called Alex. I'd have used it myself, but someone got there first. It's my favourite name for a boy. It's gorgeous. Nothing negative at all about it.
