Love it 👍🏼

partyatthepalace · 29/12/2020 13:43

It makes me think of downmarket 60s/70s American influence names like Jason, Duane etc.

I’d try and find something that is more of a proper name - lots of boys names are short eg Guy, Luke

tostaky · 29/12/2020 13:45

I thought the baddy in Despicable Me was called Drew?

BeauBeaus · 29/12/2020 20:42

@partyatthepalace oh no, downmarket?! I thought it' sounded quite smart :(

I like it, I have an Andrew

RollOnForever · 29/12/2020 21:30

I know of a lot more people with the surname Andrew(s) than Drew. Confused I have only ever heard of Nancy Drew. Not that being a surname is a negative in my view, but it is immediately trotted out on MN as A Bad Thing.

I like Drew as a nickname for Andrew.

Kanaloa · 29/12/2020 21:30

It’s nice. A nice strong name, not offensive or silly sounding.

RollOnForever · 29/12/2020 21:31

PS would avoid if your surname is Peacock.

Mmsnet101 · 29/12/2020 21:33

I love it. I think it's a bit more common here in Scotland, so well known as a boys name rather than a surname /Drew Barrymore as PP have mentioned. I've met quite a few Drews who are either just Drew or as a nn for Andrew, all professional adults and I've always thought it's a good name to see you from cute baby to adulthood!

AlwaysLatte · 29/12/2020 21:36

I like it, but I would assume it to be a girls name if I didn't know otherwise.

mathanxiety · 29/12/2020 21:44

I like it a lot.

I'm in America and I only know one boy who goes by Drew, for those of you turning up your noses at how 'American' it is. His name is short for Andrew. His parents didn't like Andy so used Drew from the start.

If you want to avoid the inevitable shortening to Andy then Drew is perfect imo.

I know one Dru, a woman. Her name is short for Drusilla.

TildaTurnip · 29/12/2020 23:00

I’d avoid if your surname begins with a P too. I’ve realised this is why I am not keen on it and it doesn’t sound very strong as I just hear Drewpy.

partyatthepalace · 30/12/2020 01:27

Yes - sorry for bluntness! I do think it’s downmarket sounding / not a proper name blah blah. Not the worst but not great.

RollOnForever · 30/12/2020 08:43

I definitely don't agree it's down-market! It's more traditional and classy to use Andrew in my view but Drew itself is not down-market to my ears. The only Drews I know are lawyers.

TheVanguardSix · 30/12/2020 08:45

I used to babysit two brothers: Drew and Jesse (both wonderful names).

finallychangedmyusername · 30/12/2020 09:40

I'm afraid it's not my cup of tea, although I do love Andrew. Andrew feels softer to me, more classic whereas Drew feels unfinished to me. In spite of Drew being a nickname for Andrew I personally find the two very different in style.

Chilldonaldchill · 30/12/2020 12:45

It's not my style but I don't dislike it.
I disagree that it sounds down-market - I do think it sounds a little dull but not terribly so.
