Alicia pronunciation variation?

Recently read that the Swedish actress Alicia Vikander pronounces her first name "ah-LISS-ee-ah."

I'd have always read Alicia as "ah-LEESH-ah", as in Dixon, Keys, Silverstone.

I actually really like "ah-LISS-ee-ah"... is this just asking for problems / pronounciation trouble though?! I'm in Scotland if that makes any difference.

I've heard it pronounced both ways, where I live it's more commonly pronounced a-liss-ia than a-leesh-a.

Nohomemadecandles · 27/12/2020 19:50

Alicia Silverstone is Alice-ee-a though

Firebird83 · 27/12/2020 19:52

You could spell it Alyssia instead

Passthewinebottle · 27/12/2020 19:58

@Firebird83

You could spell it Alyssia instead
I think that's beautiful!
elQuintoConyo · 27/12/2020 19:58

Alis-ear
I've only ever heard Aleesha on The Good Wife.

Poppyolive90 · 27/12/2020 20:00

I always like of it as a-liss-ia but I also read Felicia as fell-iss-ia

I think of the other pronunciations as american

Poppyolive90 · 27/12/2020 20:01

Think not like*

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/12/2020 20:05

I've heard both Ah - liss - ee -ah (4 syllables - like Alice with ia on the end) and Ah- lee - sha (3 syllables) pretty equally so I think most people will pronounce it how you would like - once they've heard you say it once. It's a nice name but it's not popular/common enough at the moment to have a "typical" pronunciation imo.

StacySoloman · 27/12/2020 20:13

I think Alicia Silverstone is also Alissia.
Alissia is the more traditional/English pronunciation while Aleesha as in Alicia Keys is more modern/American.

AwkwardSquad · 27/12/2020 20:33

I’m familiar with it pronounced as Alissia with the emphasis on the second syllable.

AwkwardSquad · 27/12/2020 20:34

Second syllable slightly more of an ‘ee’ than an ‘I’ sound

Bluesername · 27/12/2020 20:35

A-LISS-ee-ah is the nicer pronunciation IMO. A-LEE-sha sounds tacky.

@Bluesername Yeah I wouldn't consider Aleesha, but I like ah-LISS-ee-ah.

Interesting that most would accept that as a normal pronunciation, that's a nice surprise!

Taking it as "ah-LISS-ee-ah" - do folk like the name generally? I think it's a similar style to Olivia / Sophia but much less popular...

@Firebird83 That's nice too... not sure I love the y? Maybe Alissia instead? I generally prefer traditional spellings but it might aid confusion in this case!

Or Elysia maybe? Latin / Greek origin!

CharitySchmarity · 27/12/2020 21:17

I really like it pronounced Alissia (which was the first version I ever heard).

I think for the other pronunciation it should really be spelt Alisha or Alysha.

Justwatchthewildflowersgrow · 27/12/2020 21:24

What about Elissia? Similar but the double "ss" makes the sia sounds rather than the sha sound. Hope that makes sence it does in my head. X

Spied · 27/12/2020 21:31

I really don't understand how Alicia is pronounced Aleesha.
A girl in my dd's class is called 'Aleesha' yet her name on the Christmas card list is spelt 'Alicia'.
What are the parents thinking? It looks daft and like you have called your child the wrong name.

HollyGenneroMcClane · 27/12/2020 21:32

I would assume a liss ee a
But ive also taught an a lith ee a (spanish child)

Cam2020 · 27/12/2020 21:40

The harsh sh sound is an Americanism? I went to school with an Alicia, pronounced Ah-LIS-sia.

Names that end cia can be pronounced cee-a or sha. Alicia Marcia Felicia

It's often and English/American difference - we have Mar-cee-a they have Marsha.

DramaAlpaca · 27/12/2020 22:06

There are at least four legitimate ways to pronounce Alicia:

Ah-LISS-ee-ah
Ah-LEESE-ee-ah
Ah-LEE-sha
Ah-LEE-thea (Spanish)

I know someone who spelled it Alyssia to avoid confusion.

KirstenBlest · 28/12/2020 07:51

Alisha to rhyme with Patricia.

CinnamonTeaForMe · 28/12/2020 07:58

I'm a teacher and mostly find the pronunciation of Alicia is A-lee-sha in my area, although there have been one or two A-liss-ias too.
