Eliza or Lucy? Name of our DD1!

Hi MN,

DH and I finally set on two names that we like for our baby girl due in January.

Eliza just came to me out of nowhere; it strikes me as fun, quirky and literary at the same time, with an indirect reference to Jane Austen (“Eliza” Bennett).
Lucy has the charm of another name we love, Alice, but with a bit of added fun and the spunkiness. Also love the reference to Lucy Honeychurch from Room with a View and the meaning “light or born at dawn”.

I’m drawn to feminine and vintage names which are still classic while not being boring.

DH prefers Eliza, so does my family, I prefer Lucy and so does DH family.

So it’s a difficult decision! Do you have any favourite and why?

Our surname is one syllable and goes with both.

Thank you!! 🎄

Eliza is lovely

LadyLazaruss · 27/12/2020 10:08

Eliza

Whatishappenin · 27/12/2020 10:17

Eliza

Or elisabeth with nn Lizzie

MispyM · 27/12/2020 10:22

I prefer Eliza.

But Lucy is also nice.

How about Eliza Lucy?

Cam2020 · 27/12/2020 10:23

I'm no good becasue I really Iike them both...and Alice to boot 😂

Maybe keep the shortlist and see what she looks like when she's born? Sometimes people who are set on a name change their minds last minute so it's good (and fortunate) to have a really good plan B!

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 27/12/2020 10:24

Eliza is fab.

I don't think Lucy is spunky at all, it's a bit wet and babyish to my ears.

LittleRa · 27/12/2020 10:25

I like both. I prefer Lucy, though I wouldn’t call it “spunky”. I’d say it’s classic. I have a 6yo called Alice (so obviously I love that too!) and am 30 weeks pregnant with another girl, Lucy is on my list but DP isn’t as keen.

Chilldonaldchill · 27/12/2020 10:26

I prefer Eliza.
I do like Lucy. One of my closest friends has that name - though we all call her Luce day to day - and it's a nice name but I think it's a bit less substantial than Eliza.
Eliza Lucy is a great combination as FN and MN.

Porridgeoat · 27/12/2020 10:27

Ezme

Sarcobaleno · 27/12/2020 10:27

Eliza. It's more spirited.

Jelly4444 · 27/12/2020 10:35

Eliza or Alice are beautiful! Lucy isn't a bad name but Eliza is so much nicer.

Liana2021 · 27/12/2020 11:43

Thanks for your answers! It’s 50/50 then with a slight preference for Eliza it seems. But glad those who like Eliza also like Lucy. Waiting until she’s born is a great idea. I guess I just wanted to imagine her already as a Lucy or Eliza. I also love Eliza Lucy as a FN and MN.
Maybe I should try and choose depending on nicknames? I don’t like Alice much as a nickname, I would prefer her to be called Lucy (full name), and I very much like Lizzie as a NN.
I guess Eliza for me is a bit lacking the sweetness of Lucy but it might have a bit more substance, I agree.
So difficult! First child as well! Thanks all and keep the suggestions coming I’m all ears :)

Correction, I don’t like “Luce” so much as a nickname.

I really love both!! Maybe would pick Eliza but it's close

Norah8 · 27/12/2020 11:49

I don't like Eliza but love Lucy.
I think Eliza is an in trend name for now whereas Lucy is timeless

pophop · 27/12/2020 11:52

Both are lovely, I would say Lucy is more popular as I know a few. What about Lucille or Lucia? I would just wait to see her. I would just be wary of using both your favourite names incase you have another one.

Awrite · 27/12/2020 11:53

I love both.

If you use one of them as a middle name then you won't be able to use it if you have a second girl.

piratehooker · 27/12/2020 11:55

Definitely Eliza here, I've always loved that name. I couldn't think of the way to describe how Lucy feels to me as a name, but someone above got the words perfectly, for me. 'A bit wet and babyish'. May be just association with many Lucy's I've known over the years, though.

IsolaPribby · 27/12/2020 11:56

I have a Lucy Elizabeth, and this goes with our one syllable surname perfectly!

plumpootle · 27/12/2020 12:02

Lucy is so lovely

rslsys · 27/12/2020 12:06

We have DD2 Lucy, she has DGD Eliza - no help to you at all

Juanbablo · 27/12/2020 12:09
