Baby groups?

What are the popular names in baby groups now? Curious because a lot of my friends are pregnant (including myself) and want to know what’s on trend right now! I’m from the north east specifically Durham so anything around there will be helpful!!😇

If you don't want anything too popular then get a list of the official ONS top 100 names (most recent is the 2019 figures) and avoid any and all of the names on the list.

There's been loads of threads recently "what's popular at the moment". I don't really understand how we can help more than the actual chart lists based on data with all the figures online. The data is even broken down by region on the ONS webpage so look there.

abbie777 · 21/12/2020 00:08

Does it tell you the top 100 names in each area?

OP posts:
PlantPotting · 21/12/2020 09:01

Yes the ONS tells you top 100 by area @abbie777
The list around the country is never dramatically different though. Oliver is number 1 name in most regions for example.
The ONS information will be more helpful to you than me saying 'in my baby group in North East there's two babies called Eric so might be popular, not sure'

Just avoid all the top 100-150 names if popularity is a concern

PumpkinsMum18 · 21/12/2020 09:08

I’m not in your part of the country but had a baby earlier this year so been going to baby groups and have friends with new babies... Popular names seem to be Oliver, William, Samuel, Freddie, Olivia

Firebird83 · 21/12/2020 10:15

I hear a lot of these names at groups:

Esme
Imogen
Beatrice/Bea
Isla
Lyra

Arlo
Arthur
Theo
Oscar
Jack
Oliver
Albert/Albie

PlantPotting · 21/12/2020 10:29

Yep all the names listed above are top 100 names so yes, statistically, chances are there will be babies with these top 100 names in baby groups.

Brieminewine · 21/12/2020 10:36

I’m the same area and have heard a lot of Jacks, Olivias and Alfie’s

Plum34 · 21/12/2020 10:52

What @Whatsyourflava said will give you the best indication X

17caterpillars1mouse · 21/12/2020 12:29

East muds but here there are a lot of

Harry
Alfie
Archie
Arlo

Luna
Aurora

abbie777 · 21/12/2020 15:03

I can’t seem to find the top 100 list for each area, could you put a link or something please?🙂

StitchesInChristmasTime · 21/12/2020 15:20

There isn’t a top 100 list for each area.
There is the top 100 for England, and the top 10 for each area. So you can see the top 10 names in the North East.

I’ve linked to the Office for National Statistics page with the baby name data.
The links on that page for Baby Names for Girls / Boys in England and Wales will give lists of the top names given in 2019 (no data released for 2020 as yet).

abbie777 · 21/12/2020 15:31

Thank you, there were only 7 girls named the name we want in County Durham last year so fingers crossed we’re pretty safe.

Whatsyourflava · 28/12/2020 12:55

Sid or Syd

Coronaquandry · 28/12/2020 13:04

The three babies I know who were recently born in Newcastle/Durham are Noah, Frances and Theadora.

Around here (London): Ada, Alice, Freddie, Augustus, Raffy, Rae, Francesca, Kasper, May, Jessie, Lewis, another Theadora..

Hope that helps!

Buttercupcup · 28/12/2020 13:11

I’m in Gateshead the names I hear most often are:
Noah
Alfie
Albie
Jack
Oliver
Harry
Jude
Arthur/artie

Olivia
Ophelia
Amelia/Emilia
Luna
Esme
Charlotte

Bee175 · 28/12/2020 13:32

Wouldn't worry too much to be honest. I've not met any under 3s called Olivia, Amelia, Ava, Isla but I have met two Zeldas. The second mother was not impressed when I mentioned that I knew another little one with the same name.
Pick something you love.

My dd was one of 52 born in England and Wales. One of these is in her ballet class Grin. They also have rather similar surnames

Februaryisnear · 28/12/2020 14:06

I wouldn’t worry too much!

According to MN Archie and Alfie are super common and yet I don’t know a single one where I live..

Pick a name you love

Adelais · 28/12/2020 19:15

Arthur, Teddy, Henry, George for boys
Elsie, Ada, Florence for Girls

Snapcat · 28/12/2020 19:22

Ava
Amelia
Oscar (every other boy is Oscar!)
Arthur

Hoowhoowho · 28/12/2020 19:37

You can never tell, we considered a name for DS in 2016 that I would have said was pretty rare (31 babies named it in his birth year) we met another at our local baby group.

The name we actually named him is rarer and we’ve not met another yet

Whatsyourflava · 28/12/2020 20:02

@Hoowhoowho how funny you met another at the baby group.
Youre right that you can't predict if you'll meet another with the same name, but you can predict if you're likely to continually run into people with the same name as you throughout a lifetime.

Take the two names Ione and Isla for example.

There could possibly be one class in the country that exists with 2 girls called "Ione" in it. But there will be far more classes with 2 "Isla"s in. Infact running into another baby called Ione would probably be a lovely surprise because it's so rarely used, that'll probably be the only other Ione you meet in your lifetime.
If you're the only Isla in the class then of course you're likely to meet another Isla soon. Whether that be at sports clubs, Uni, future work... you'll meet quite a few.

There's less than 10 babies called Ione a year and around 3,000 Isla's.

Both are lovely names by the way but huge differences in popularity and usage.

If you're someone who is concerned about popularity then the first step is to completely avoid the top 100 names.
