My first girl has a gaelic name ending in "dh" and I think I'd like to carry this on. Our boy name would be Ruaridh

The Girl names we like so far are. They also don't have to end in "dh"

But it’s only your husband’s cousin - not sister. If you like the name, then use it. Niamh is frequently in the top ten of girls names in Ireland.

Fiadh?

florascotia2 · 20/12/2020 16:08

OP the correct Gaelic spelling is Ruairidh, with an 'i' on each side of the second 'r'.I know that many people don't use it, and the choice is obviously up to you, but just thought I'd mention it so as you have the option:
learngaelic.scot/fichead-facal/ff-names-boys.jsp

The same site - very, very authoritative - also has a short list of girls names, with pronounciations to listen to: learngaelic.scot/fichead-facal/ff-names-girls.jsp

Garman Katy

cremuel · 20/12/2020 16:11

If you use Ruairidh, use the proper Gaelic spelling. In Gaelic, you must always have a broad vowel (a, o, u) both sides of a consonant cluster, or a narrow vowel (i, e). So you can’t have ‘a’ one side of ‘r’ and ‘i’ the other.

florascotia2 · 20/12/2020 16:27

As various posters including Cremuel have said on another spread earlier today, the Gaelic name is Mairi not Mhairi.

Mairi is the proper name (nominative).
Eg: My name is Mairi.

Mhairi is the form of the name used when speaking directly to the person (vocative).
Eg: Good morning, Mhairi

OwlDoll · 20/12/2020 16:58

When you say Gaelic do you mean Scottish or Irish?
In Irish it is spelt Ruaidhrí or the more modern Ruairí.
What about Sadhbh (Sive) for a girl? Or the variant in Ulster Irish, Sadhbha (Sigh-wa), or the diminuative Saidhbhín (Sigh-veen)
Other Irish Gaelic names include:
Clíodhna
Rioghnach
Fiadh

florascotia2 · 20/12/2020 17:30

OwlDoll Scottish Gaelic. Scottish and Irish Gaelic are very similar but not the same. The OPs suggested spelling wasn't proper Scottish OR proper Irish.

The link I sent was to a website produced by all the leading Scottish Gaelic language organisations. Here it is again:

learngaelic.scot/fichead-facal/ff-names-boys.jsp

florascotia2 · 20/12/2020 17:44

OwlDoll This reminds me of a post on another thread where a poster from Ireland said that she had visited the Isle of Skye and thought that the Gaelic names on the signposts were all spelled wrong.

Both 'proper' Scottish Gaelic and 'proper' Irish Gaelic spellings are obviously OK.
