I'm not pregnant, but I've been discussing names with dp.

I love love love "Atlas". Dp likes it, but doesn't love it. He also thinks that potential kid wouldn't like it either Xmas Sad

Any fans? Xmas Smile

Love.

EssentialHummus · 20/12/2020 22:32

There was a thread about it a few weeks back. It was divisive! I’m not a fan of Atlas particularly but there are some lovely Greek myth names if that’s your bag.

Lucy830 · 20/12/2020 22:41

I love it too. I already had first name so we used it as a middle name.

Tardigrade001 · 20/12/2020 22:53

No. He was condemned to hold the sky forever.

ClaireP20 · 20/12/2020 23:05

It's horrific and self indulgent.
I immediately think 'God his parents must be twats'. Sorry x

WomanWithAnX · 20/12/2020 23:47

My partner and I are both twats to be fair.

@ErrolTheDragon

Any fans?

No, but a big paperback road atlas wafted about works pretty well.

@WomanWithAnX - just because you're a self confessed twat (and I mean that in the nicest possible way) I don't think it's fair to impose a name on a child who has no say on the matter, and have people judge them + you off the back of it.

tostaky · 29/12/2020 13:39

One of my son is called Atlas. My husband is from Morocco and we climbed the Atlas mountain before i got pregnant. It is not a muslim name yet it is linked to Morocco.

It is a lovely name and we are happy about it. He doesnt get teased and people always remember him.

Fishingforhapiness · 29/12/2020 13:44

I love it. Im 16 weeka. Considering Atlas, Atticus, Apollo and Odin. Middle name is Frank

PoodleMoth · 29/12/2020 20:42

Really like it!
@fishingforhapiness love your style!

blueleonburger · 30/12/2020 00:04

Nope

MercyBodle · 30/12/2020 03:54

I don't mind it.

Topseyt · 30/12/2020 03:59

A big no from me.

coronafiona · 30/12/2020 04:53

No. He'll be bullied at high school and forever saddled with people waving atlases at him. Sorry but you need to think outside your own wishes. This is a person we are talking about not a toy or a pet.

nachthexe · 30/12/2020 05:04

I drive one. I’m a huge fan of Douglas Adams but I draw the line at naming a child after my car.
Atlas. Goodness. It’s quite the name, even without the SUV connotations.

oohmamama · 30/12/2020 05:08

@WomanWithAnX

My partner and I are both twats to be fair.

Sounds like a winner then.

palmstar · 30/12/2020 05:16

Absolutely love it.
You're never going to find any name liked by everyone so do what you want. It's a beautiful name.

I like it. I would wonder if you were Coheed and Cambria fans.

KaptainKaveman · 30/12/2020 06:13

Ajax? Zeus? Poseidon? So many Greek and Roman gods' names to.choose from.

insancerre · 30/12/2020 06:28

My local kebab takeaway is called atlas

Gothamgirl1970 · 30/12/2020 06:55

I absolutely love it

EdgeOfACoin · 30/12/2020 06:58

It's a bit OTT for my tastes, but I think names of Greek heroes are difficult to pull off.

I think children will smirk in Geography every time they are asked to look at an atlas, which might irritate/embarrass your child, and teachers might assume the parents are somewhat pretentious. (If you're actually Greek you might escape those latter connotations.)

I'd either use it for a middle name or look for a Greek-inspired name which is not quite so out there.

tiers4fears · 30/12/2020 07:36

My father was nicknamed Atlas by his peers as he was small but incredibly strong. We thought about giving it as a name for DC but we were not brave or cutting edge enough.

KaptainKaveman · 30/12/2020 07:56

Prometheus? he brought fire to the world you know (against the wishes of Zeus).

Hades?
Cronos?
Narcissus?

BastardAnts · 30/12/2020 09:34

I don’t think bound paper Atlases are going to be much of classroom feature for much longer, if they even are still currently. I’ve never heard anyone refer to a digital ‘Atlas’ either, just to ‘maps’. So I think it’s likely the association will be to just a mythological name in future.
In any case there are far worse connotations that a first name could bring up. Kids will always get teased for something- whether it’s their name or hair or shoes or something completely made up. Choosing a less interesting name than you’d wanted isn’t any guarantee against teasing at school. Go for it OP.
