With the help from MN I have narrowed my list down to Anna or Alice, we will most like wait and see what DD looks like but which is your favourite?
I think Anna is classic, classy, strong and feminine that everyone can pronounce and spell. Same as Alice but Alice doesn't feel strong to me?

I like them both but I'd choose Anna

Nell96 · 19/12/2020 23:14

I find Anna really dull. It's a very common name and just feels a bit 'meh' to me. I like Anya and Annabel. I love Alice - a beautiful, strong, classic name, and I love the association with Alice in Wonderland.

This shows Alice is much more (and consistently so) common than Anna.

Anna

daisypond · 20/12/2020 10:04

Anna. I agree with your reasoning too.
Alice is more “now”, but both are nice classic names.

Nell96 · 20/12/2020 10:27

@TildaTurnip - I think darkgreener is an excellent tool for identifying overall name trends, however, I don't think it always tallies with people's lived experience - it often has a lot to do with how old you are, whereabouts in the country you live etc. I knew loads of Annas growing up in the 80s and 90s, but I've only known one Alice, a 4 year old little girl - so yes, I agree that Alice is probably more popular right now, but I also think it's just a more interesting name. I think the ONS website gives more detail of the popularity of names based on region, age of mother etc. if you're interested.

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2020 11:34

Interesting. Alice was v v popular in our SW London demograph 20 to 25 years ago. Far less now. I'd say Penelope and Ottilie have taken over with an occasional Daphne thrown in. Also have a sprinkling of friends who have grandaughters named Anna.

Gemma888 · 20/12/2020 16:41

Alice. Both lovely though.

user1493494961 · 20/12/2020 17:13

Both lovely but slightly prefer Alice.

danascully96 · 20/12/2020 17:43

Anna! Anna Karenina is a great novel and she’ll have the option of the lovely nickname “Annie,” which makes it romantic and sweet. Also, Anna is definitely stronger than Alice, whereas Alice seems more natural for a wholesome literary character.

Alice is quirkier and seems more of a vintage than a classic. I only knew one Alice growing in my year and would consider it an older name.

Both solid names 🥰

Anna

Ann's

resm · 20/12/2020 18:11

Anna, I love it. Not keen on Alice at all, sorry.

Shelby30 · 20/12/2020 18:45

Anna, I think it's nicer. I've never liked Alice and I just always think of that song with the swear word and Alice in it.

Thegereldine3000 · 20/12/2020 19:09

Alice, Anna sounds really boring.

Shadowboy · 20/12/2020 19:13

Alice for me

DramaAlpaca · 20/12/2020 19:25

I love both. I'd pick Alice over Anna, but only just.

CrispySeaweedIsReallyCabbage · 20/12/2020 19:26

Anna. I like both, but think Anna is stronger sounding.

MercyBodle · 21/12/2020 03:41

Tough one as both are lovely. In the end I would prefer to be called Anna, so .... Anna.

lakesidexmas · 21/12/2020 04:20

Anna is nice but almost every Russian girl I know seems to be called Anna or a version of it.

So for me Alice seems more unusual.

Both are nice names though.

christmasathomeagain · 21/12/2020 04:49

Alice for me.

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 21/12/2020 08:07

Both are nice names

WiseOwlWan · 21/12/2020 08:08

Anna

FippertyGibbett · 21/12/2020 08:10

Alice, it’s more feminine.

WiseOwlWan · 21/12/2020 08:16

Well, that's funny, I think Alice is harsh because it ends in a hiss. So I know a lot of people love the name but to me it isn't a feminine sound. It's too sharp.
