I think that this is the name for my son. Just wanted to know what you all thought. Thanks in advance.

@Mavedrai

I like it -- it has a certain rugged masculinity. (Probably because I associate it with "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.")
Me too! I loved that show back in the day.

Anyway OP, i like it. Its sort of different but familiar at the same time.

I quite like Sullivan as a surname but not a first name. Sully has an unpleasant meaning 'to soil or stain'. It also sounds like a cross between sulky and sullen.

Solomon nn Sol or Solly would be better IMO. Or Sunny as nn for Sullivan.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/12/2020 21:52

I tend more towards traditional names but Sullivan is one of the few surnames used as first names that I think sounds pretty nice (others are Jensen, Harrison, Sampson and Maxwell). Like pp suggested though, I'd use the nn Sunny (Sonny) personally - Sully is very Monster Inc or famous Pilot to me, although I suppose nn's don't matter much.

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/12/2020 21:55

Awful.

Yennefer19 · 18/12/2020 22:28

I love surnames as first names and do love Sullivan but it’s my surname so can’t go for that one 🤣🤣.

GemmeFatale · 18/12/2020 23:13

The Hudson River landing is my first association.

Personally I like the name

Norah8 · 18/12/2020 23:14

Yes was on our boy shortlist

ldnstb123 · 19/12/2020 01:23

I love the name sully

MercyBodle · 19/12/2020 03:31

I quite like it.

ShanKayak · 19/12/2020 16:35

Sullivan is English spelling of
Súilleibheán / Súilleimheán which is probably the global name Suleiman (Solomon).
It's an epic name. Go for it.

HolyMusicalBman · 19/12/2020 17:14

Thanks for the positive comments, Sonny probably would be a better nickname

ShanKayak · 19/12/2020 21:12

"Súil" would be a lovely nn - it means "hope" as well as "eye".
And Sullivan in Irish is spelt "Súilleabhán" - I muddled up the spelling on my earlier post..

MirandaMarple · 19/12/2020 21:18

I have a friend who's name is Sully. Her full name is Sultana (Bangladeshi)

dementedma · 19/12/2020 21:24

The new Noah. Very popular and will date

August20 · 19/12/2020 21:47

@Yennefer19

I don't know, Sullivan Sullivan has a sort of ring to it Grin

Yennefer19 · 19/12/2020 21:53

@August20 😂😂 that is very true

LizzieAnt · 19/12/2020 22:09

@ Shankayak
Never heard of a link with Solomon?

DramaAlpaca · 19/12/2020 22:51

@ Shankayak Never heard of a link with Solomon?
Me neither Confused

As far as I'm aware it's an anglicisation of the Irish 'súil' which means 'eye' and 'dubh' which means 'black'. So a person with dark eyes.

Nothing to do with Solomon.

ShanKayak · 19/12/2020 23:06

I just don't think the usual explanations for Súilleabhán are plausible. Suleiman OTOH seems compelling to me.

LizzieAnt · 19/12/2020 23:10

Right so Grin

Of course they are. Lots of surnames are descriptive in both Irish and English.

I'm not buying the Sulieman link at all. Sullivan/O'Sullivan/Súilleabhan is a fine old Munster name.

ShanKayak · 20/12/2020 08:29

So a brown-eyed handsome man sailed over the sea to Munster and fell in love with a Kerry girl. They called their baby after his dad. Or his brown eyes. I say the dad, you say the eyes. Cibé.

LizzieAnt · 20/12/2020 09:15

Well, brown-eyed handsome men are always very welcome in Munster GrinGrin

DramaAlpaca · 20/12/2020 15:14

Absolutely @LizzieAnt Grin

Some historians think the dark hair common in the west of Ireland is from Spanish visitors.

I like your story too @ShanKayak, very romantic Smile

Dinosauraddict · 20/12/2020 15:17

I love it and wanted it (it was in my top 3 shortlist)- DH vetoed it.
