Similiar to cousin?

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice please....
My OH and I have been having a bit of a nightmare with girls names. He suddenly came across the name Norah a few months and became smitten, it took me a little while but I'm in agreement now too.
However... It suddenly dawned on us at the weekend that our chosen girl name looks similar to my OH's newphew - Noah. We don't know whether to try and change our choice, speak with his brother or not worry about it. Baby's due in a week so nothing like a last minute worry Grin

What would you do?

Thanks x

I really don’t think it matters. If they were both your kids yes, but in this case I think it’s fine. I definitely don’t think it’s something to worry over! X

The R in Norah is your friend here, it takes over the sound and changes it significantly. I would still use it. My cousins son is Louis and we named our son Lewis. Everyone assumed we wanted Louis but changed because of them -we didn't, and besides that, the sound/ pronunciation of the two names are completely different. People are ridiculous sometimes 😂🤷‍♀️ suit yourself

bridgetreilly · 15/12/2020 15:26

Norah and Noah do not sound at all similar. Use it.

M0rT · 15/12/2020 15:27

I think your ok, it's different sexes and sounds.
If anything it's flattering to their choice as it's a bit similar without being the same.
Norah is a lovely name, I had an aunt called that and she was a very calm, gentle, strong and determined woman.

Seaswims · 15/12/2020 15:43

They sound completely different OP, I really wouldn't worry

Whatsyourflava · 15/12/2020 15:44

Completely different. You're overthinking

heybb · 15/12/2020 15:54

Thank you everyone Smile

We probably are way overthinking and I've been trying to tell myself that they are different, only look similar written down but these hormones are having some fun with me I think lol

I agree it's fine, but if you're worried you could go for Nora instead of Norah to make it look less similar.

Joeylucy · 15/12/2020 19:49

I think it’s totally different but agree Nora would look less similar written down

VenusClapTrap · 16/12/2020 07:42

It’s fine ds and his cousin have very similar names. I was a bit Hmm when BIL and SIL announced nephew’s name, but it’s never been a problem.

AriesTheRam · 16/12/2020 08:55

Of it was two boys names in the family sounding v different then fair enough but a girl and boy? No its fine imo

Chilldonaldchill · 16/12/2020 09:01

I think it's fine but I prefer the look of Nora anyway so I would definitely take the h off so it looks even less similar.

Mrsi2020 · 16/12/2020 09:21

Yeah I would drop the H and then the ending is different too in spelling. Nora/Norah is a lovely name btw xx

JemimaTiggywinkle · 16/12/2020 09:33

I think it’s fine, but also much prefer the Nora spelling.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 16/12/2020 09:36

p.s. if you’re set on the name, I wouldn’t speak to BIL in advance about it - you don’t need to ask permission and it’s never a good idea to invite opinions on name choices from family members.

Lizadork · 16/12/2020 10:49

Could always use Noelle being christmas time? Not so keen on Norah/Nora, unlikely to be top much of an issue as sounds different to Noah. Maybe test out the test before rushing to register, see what the reaction is. I also like Nova (might get away with Novah?) and Novalee.

Lizadork · 16/12/2020 10:50

Test out name*

WhyNotMeThough · 16/12/2020 10:57

In my accent, saying Noah and Norah is very similar, but I can see how probably most English accents sound these names very differently

WhyNotMeThough · 16/12/2020 10:58

My Scottish accent, I should clarify.

resm · 16/12/2020 22:01

You could give her Eleanor with the nickname Nora/Norah if it really bothered you, but I think they are such different names regardless of the similar spelling.

Love Norah btw! I also have a nephew called Noah and don’t think the connection would occur to me.

LadyCatStark · 16/12/2020 22:07

DS has the boy’s version of his cousin’s name. It’s absolutely fine.

Grimbot · 21/12/2020 16:20

Fine for cousins I’d say. I have an Elliot and his cousin is Eleanor and I did wonder if it might be a little too similar but no one even mentioned it.

JanewaysBun · 21/12/2020 18:08

Fine
