Love both these names Elsie is a family name but I’ve always liked the name Fern too. Feel torn between the two at the moment...

Fern, gorgeous.

calimommy · 14/12/2020 23:36

Fern. I loved Fernley/Fernly for a boy but DH was appalled 🙈🤷‍♀️

Fern

Fern is lovely

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/12/2020 04:44

Of the two, Fern. It is less likely to date (as it's never been overly popular). Elsie is lovely as a nn for classic Elisabeth, but as a given name it's part of the cylical trend for "old fashioned names" (like Ivy, Nancy, Edith, Mabel etc) and will likely date. However if its a family name, then you have good cause to use it...

Fern!

Joeylucy · 15/12/2020 11:27

Thank you for all the replies I have always loved fern but when I found out my due date was my late grandma Elsies birthday it crept into my head. Maybe a middle name although I do like fern Olivia. We have kept the gender a surprise anyway Smile

Fern Smile

Fern Elizabeth (long version of Elsie) flows beautifully, in the same way as Fern Olivia, would that be an option?

Another vote for Fern - feels much fresher and more distinctive than Elsie, and I agree about the ‘put upon housemaid’ thing (I do love some of the current Granny Chic names - DD actually has one - but Elsie is too cutesy and insubstantial for me).

Fern Elizabeth is lovely, and would honour your grandma beautifully.

As someone else said Fern feels much more fresh.

MotherOfDragonite · 16/12/2020 12:40

Fern.

Elsie is a pretty name for a little girl or a milkmaid but I don't know if it translates as well to a competent professional woman IYSWIM.

MotherOfDragonite · 16/12/2020 12:41

If you are considering a riff on Elsie as a middle name, it can also be short for Elspeth which is lovely!

FourPlatinumRings · 16/12/2020 12:43

Ferne but with the e to ornament it. I don't like how Fern looks written down and Elsie is pretty common these days.

JumpingJamboree · 16/12/2020 12:44

Fern!
It was on my list but DH wouldn't let me use it. I'm holding on to the hope I might be able to use if for our next one...
