Is anyone here named Felicity?

I see the name gets a lot of love on Mumsnet and it is in our shortlist of two names for baby girl due in the new year, but I would love to have some insight from an actual person named Felicity.

Do you like your name? If so, why, and if not why not?

I’ve never met a Felicity myself. The name appeals to me for its sonority and meaning (I’m French and it also means happiness in French). My concern is that it might seems a bit old fashioned, and having an old fashioned name myself, I would rather have had something a bit more modern, but maybe what seems vintage to me is not at all to an English person (I know DH doesn’t see it).

Any advice from real life Felicities would be great 😊 🙏

I have an ex girlfriend called Felicity - she absolutely hated it. Her family called her Lissy, everyone else called her Flick, and she changed it when she was 20.

LilyRose89 · 13/12/2020 09:12

@Ohalrightthen wow that’s another level of not liking it if she actually changed it. Any reason behind it she told you of?

I am called Felicity, and I love my name.
I use Felicity for 'best', my friends and most family call me Flick, my mum used to call me Fliss and my dad still calls me Flossy😁
I know I am biased, but I think I have the best of all worlds - a classic name that lends itself to nice nns.

milienhaus · 13/12/2020 09:18

It’s not my name but I have known at least 4 - mixture of Fliss’s and Flicks. None of them seemed to dislike it!

LilyRose89 · 13/12/2020 09:20

I think that’s beautiful too @Ratched :)

Love the nicknames too even if I’m not coming from a culture of nicknames (France) so didn’t understand the whole thing here about them! :D

Glad to know you love your name.

She's a butch lesbian, and the ostentatious femininity of her name (she used to say every time someone called her by her full name she felt like looking around for the little girl in the pink frilly dress) made her really uncomfortable and unhappy. I think a lot of it also was to do with it being a reminder of the disappointment that she felt her mother felt in not getting a daughter who wanted to do "girly things". Her being a lesbian wasn't a problem, but her not being stereotypically feminine really was.

passthemustard · 13/12/2020 09:35

I'm not a Felicity, but the baby I'm due next week would have been Felicity, if he had been a girl. I absolutely love the name. But I don't know any personally......

bearfood · 13/12/2020 09:41

@Ratched my dd is Felicity and known as Flossie to everyone Smile the only other Felicity I've known is a French teacher, known as Flick.

Whatsyourflava · 13/12/2020 09:59

I have an adult friend called felicity
She loved her name and preferred the full version to nicknames but she liked nicknames too she just loved the full version best.

It's a great name, I love it

Verity, Jemima and Clementine have a similar feel to me but maybe not to you.

Ariela · 13/12/2020 10:03

I've a friend called Fizz, she doesn't seem to use Felicity. Absolutely suits her down to the ground, she is animated, bubbly, great fun, an absolute social person, even on Zoom meetings.

Doublebubblebubble · 13/12/2020 10:10

I know 2 Felicity's. I personally like the name but one calls herself Fee which im not as keen on but if she likes it, I like it IYKWIM. And the other calls herself Flick which I HATE.

ILoveStickers · 13/12/2020 10:15

I went to school with one, and I know a baby Felicity. It really suits the baby, not so sure it suited the one I knew at school. It's a great name but maybe less wearable for some people - but I feel that about lots of longer names.

On the plus side, Felicitas is a great early Saint, though it's a grizzly story.

Firebird83 · 13/12/2020 23:40

I know one who goes by Fliss. She likes her name.

Notdeliasmith · 13/12/2020 23:42

I know three ladies called felicity and all of them go by a nickname (2 fliss and one fee)

Frazzled2207 · 13/12/2020 23:46

I know a 3 yo Felicity, I love it, thought I’m not keen on the various shortenings. Her mum is adamant she will always be Felicity though.
I think it’s quite old fashioned but in a good way. Makes a change from being called Isla/Evie/Lily/Olivia etc

justwanttobemum · 14/12/2020 12:12

I like this name and famous actress felicity Jones, she's famous and beautiful (chalet girl; Star Wars; the mean one in the Worst Witch - 90s babies will know)!

JemimaTiggywinkle · 14/12/2020 12:53

I know one in her 50s (no nickname),
one in her 30s (very posh and known only as Fizzy),
and one under 10 (no nickname).

It does seem to be having a resurgence. Personally I prefer Verity as a similar virtue name.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/12/2020 14:50

I dislike shortening the name. Hate Flick and Fliss

I think it’s a bit of a hippy name. I’ve never known as many as there are now. I know a few baby Felicity’s.

Smellybluecheese · 14/12/2020 14:53

I know three - one 5 year old and two 1 year olds. Variously known as Fizzy, Fee, and Fliss.

CharitySchmarity · 14/12/2020 18:26

I'm not called Felicity bu I used to have a boss who was. She was a very cheerful and confident person and she didn't shorten her name, so I assume she liked it. One of my colleagues used to call her Facility sometimes, just light-heartedly - I wouldn't say it was her established nickname. I think it's a beautiful name and if it has to have a short form, my favourite would probably be Lissy. (But don't spell it Licie, like the Alicia I used to know who used that short form. It just looks... lousy!)

PillowPrincess · 14/12/2020 18:37

It just makes me want to say Facility.

Wishing56 · 14/12/2020 20:43

One of my DD is called Felicity. I don't like Flick as a nn. We call her Lissy or Fliss. I always loved the name before I even thought about babies.
My DD is only 10months so cant say whether she likes it but i do Grin

WellTidy · 14/12/2020 20:56

It was pretty much top of my list when I was pregnant (with boys!) but DH wasn’t keen. It is still joint top - with Elizabeth - of my list of girls names though. Not that I am having another. I really like it. Ditto Emma.

I know one felicity and she loves her name.

purplecorkheart · 14/12/2020 21:00

I know a Felicity. She is a lady in her 50's but is 20 in her mind set. Other than that I think of Felicity as the main character in am American Sitcom when I was in my teens. I do like the name though.

LilyRose89 · 15/12/2020 10:26

Thanks all for the answers! @Whatsyourflavafunny you mention these names because except from Clementine, I seriously am considering Jemima and Verity (DH not so keen on Verity though).
Basically I have two loves:
Either the old fashioned names that are undergoing a revival: Ivy, Jemima, Felicity.
Or more classic ones: Elizabeth, Alice, Esme, Isabella.

We’re lucky that our surname goes with everything (One syllable), but it makes it veeery difficult to choose!

Any personal list of yours or other MM who like the list I shared above is welcome!
