What are your opinions on the name Shiloh and do you prefer it as a boys or girls name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Isn't there a film about a dog called Shiloh? I might have made that up but it sounds like a dog name to me

Firebird83 · 13/12/2020 00:10

I like it for a boy. I seem to be in the minority though!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/12/2020 01:24

There is a (male) actor called Shiloh Fernandez, but as pp have mentioned the first thing most people think of is either the Battle or Brangelina - neither of which would be great associations imo. It is a nice sounding name though (and to me it leans more boy).

LittleTiger007 · 13/12/2020 17:37

I absolutely love this name and it’s right at the top of our list of girls names! (17 weeks currently)

It means peace and is a biblical name, uncommon and beautiful in my opinion. As a teacher I’m glad I’ve also never taught one!

florascotia2 · 13/12/2020 17:55

It doesn't necessarily mean 'peace', in the way that we would understand it today.
It's more like calling a child 'the Messiah' (which would in the distnat past have been understood as male).

or else it's simply a place name:

LittleTiger007 · 13/12/2020 18:00

Bethany is a place name also used as a girls name.

florascotia2 · 13/12/2020 18:38

Must admit that I'm not a fan of place names as personal names, though many people do like them.

Bethany = house of welcome of house of figs
Beverley = beaver lake
Paris = home of the Parisii tribe
Kimberley = forest of the royal fortress
Brooklyn = broken or marshy land
etc etc
Is a child any one of these?

Before anyone asks, Florence comes from a saint's name 'Florentinus' not the city.

florascotia2 · 13/12/2020 18:38

'or' not 'of' - wretched predictive text

myneighboursarerude · 13/12/2020 18:44

There was a film called Shiloh about a boy who befriended a hunting dog called he called Shiloh. They adored each other but his Hunter owner wouldn’t give him away.

It makes me weep. Shiloh is always a dog name to me.

Kanaloa · 13/12/2020 21:02

Reminds me of Angelia Jolie’s child. I’m not keen on the sound for some reason.

LittleTiger007 · 14/12/2020 08:19

@florascotia2 thanks for the links re the meaning of Shiloh, I love it even more.
To me the messiah is Jesus/Yeshua and so this ancient reference adds to the beauty of the name.

I know of people with daughters called London and Sydney. It doesn’t matter if it’s a place name if you like the name. Shiloh is not well known as a place name in western culture.

helpmum2003 · 14/12/2020 08:26

My honest opinion is you'd sound like an Angelina wannabe whatever the meaning of the name and your motivation. It's not an attractive name for me. Sorry.

LittleTiger007 · 14/12/2020 08:53

This name goes way back to biblical times. If people want to think I’m a Brangelina wannabe that says more about them, it wouldn’t matter to me a jot.
Does this mean we avoid all names celebrities have chosen?
Ooops my friend with a clementine is copying Claudia Schiffer.
Don’t call your child Miles that’s copying John Legend... etc.

If you like a name then you like a name.

PeppermintSoda · 14/12/2020 08:56

Makes me think of a silo used for storing silage on a farm

Councilworker · 14/12/2020 09:01

@florascotia2 Florence Nightingale was named after the city though as she was born there. Her sister had the middle name Parthenope after her place of birth.

Anyway, Shiloh...not keen. I associate it with girls as the best known person is Shiloh Pitt. It's not an attractive sounding name.

Divebar · 14/12/2020 09:05

Is it pronounced “ shy low” ? I’ve never come across it in real life and I LIKE IT!

Divebar · 14/12/2020 09:08

Brad and Angelina are old news anyway now

Oh to answer your other question I think it works equally for a girl or a boy Smile

HorridHamble · 14/12/2020 09:16

I think of it as a boy’s name because a friend of mine had it as one of his middle names. I had never heard it before, or since (except Angelina Jolie’s daughter). I really like it for a boy, but I wouldn’t raise an eyebrow if a girl was called Shiloh either.

Fluttering5 · 14/12/2020 09:18

I love it, but I would say for a boy.
Seem to be in the minority here though.

NaToth · 14/12/2020 09:19

We have a friend called Shiloh. It really suits him.

DollyParton2 · 14/12/2020 10:09

Id just assume you’d copied Angelina and think it was a bit sad tbh.

MimiDaisy11 · 14/12/2020 10:28

I try to ignore celebrities private lives and I'm generally not interested but even I know the Angelina and Brad Pitt connection, so that's what I first think of.

florascotia2 · 14/12/2020 11:52

Yes, I know about Florence Nightingale but she was not the first or only person to have been called Florenz/Florian/Flor/Floris or other names based on the old Roman name.
She was the exception rather than the rule.
