Nina -- is it like Gina?

I like the name Nina, and have it on our list. Then DH went and added Gina, which I see as a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NAME (like Harry/Gary -- no offense to the lovely Gina's out there!). He thinks this is absurd. Which one of us is right?

You are. I am in love with Ella. My partner loves Eleanor. We're both decidedly meh at each other's choices even tho it's a super similar name. Likewise I don't like Bella even though it's only an extra letter.

Incidentally I also much prefer Nina to Gina

Lotsachocolateplease · 11/12/2020 13:44

I agree with you! They’re totally different names! I do know a Geena though which I think is cool!
My godmother is a Gina (Georgina) so I associate that name with an older generation - Nina is mentioned a lot on here as a suggestion for a girls name so I associate that with the next generation of babies!

Nell96 · 11/12/2020 13:51

You're right. And Nina's a lovely name.

outofwatertoday · 11/12/2020 13:51

Omg35, thanks -- you could use Ella as a nickname of Eleanor (I know one!)

Totally different.

I like Nina but not Gina

Iloveyoucaterpillar · 11/12/2020 13:53

Another vote for Nina, my baby name for the girl we didn't end up having. Totally different to Gina.

Whenwillow · 11/12/2020 13:53

So he's put it on the list as a name he likes, yes? And you don't like it. Which is fair enough. What does he think of Nina?

KittenCalledBob · 11/12/2020 13:54

It doesn't really matter who's right, does it? You can like or dislike a name for any reason. Is he saying that you have to like Gina, because you like Nina? If so, he's being unreasonable (even though this isn't AIBU). But if not, who cares. You writing Nina prompted him to think of Gina. No big deal.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 11/12/2020 13:57

Change the first letter of his name Xmas Grin

Fwiw I much prefer Nina.

outofwatertoday · 11/12/2020 13:59

Oh he likes Nina -- it's more the point that he thinks Gina is really similar, whereas I think they are really different names. We won't go with Gina because we don't agree, but I was just interested in what other people thought. True that people see names totally different though of course!

Just to throw a spanner in the works, what about Tina? I feel it’s different again from both Nina and Gina.
I had a primary teacher whose saying was Near enough is not good enough, and I tend to agree here.
Does your DH think John and Don, Jim and Tim or Tom and Dom are the same?
I’ve got a definite order of preference: Nina, then Gina then Tina

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/12/2020 14:12

No Gina is completely different in style to Nina (Gina is feels a touch dated and a bit more of a nickname as well, as least in the UK). Nina is closer in style to Anya imo, classic/ well known but a bit more exotic/quirky than similar Anna.

outofwatertoday · 11/12/2020 14:27

Hadn't even thought about Tina -- yes, in my mind, a name in a different universe as Nina (but yes, I recognize that sounds a bit crazy!)

Of course you'e right. That would be like saying Cora, Dora, Flora, Nora and Laura were all very similar names when as any fule kno they are not at all alike.

newmum332 · 11/12/2020 15:11

This sounds like something my husband would say!! Completely different, you are right and Nina is lovely.

Coolhand2 · 11/12/2020 15:40

I like Nina, my niece is Nina, at first I wasn't a fan but now I really love her name. I would prefer Gianna than Gina.

Whenwillow · 11/12/2020 16:09

Ah ok - well I love Nina but not keen on Gina or Tina, and you're right, they each have a different feel.

PlantPotting · 11/12/2020 16:34

Nina is great
Gina is awful

DramaAlpaca · 11/12/2020 23:56

They are different in that Nina is a name in itself and Gina is a diminutive of Georgina. Tina is also a diminutive, usually of Christina.

I think Gina is a much stronger, more feisty name than Nina. Nina is a bit insubstantial to me, it's very soft and not a strong name.

I prefer Gina to Nina, and I can't stand Tina.

Superstardjs · 12/12/2020 00:03

Nina is ok. Gina is .... ooh aah just a little bit, ooh, aah, a liitle bit... no.
I have taught/teach a zillion Neena/Ninas, as is a v popular Indian name, so not very unique, but still nice.

Katgolde · 12/12/2020 08:37

Add Cleaner, Ribena and Keener to the list and see what he says?

Lena is nice though...

Chilldonaldchill · 13/12/2020 09:42

You are!
Nina is lovely, Tina is awful and Gina is in between but a very different feel.
I do like Georgina though.

TheVanguardSix · 13/12/2020 09:47

I much prefer Nina.
But Nina and Gina evoke two totally different feelings. Nina has a cool, elegant yet euro-punk feel to it. Gina is very Italian-American to me (as an American who grew up with Ginas, then lived in Italy and never met one!).

Nina and Mena/Mina are good names.

TheVanguardSix · 13/12/2020 09:50

As for Tina... no.
But Tineke, yes!
I love the name Tineke (which is sort of an old fashioned Dutch name on its own or as a diminutive of Christina/Christiana).

borntobequiet · 13/12/2020 09:55

I know a Mina. I believe Bina is also a name. Lots of alternatives, though I don’t understand what your actual issue is, apart from your husband has added a name to your list.
