Bessie?

Currently 14 weeks with Dc3.
DC1 for my partner.
We'd like to chose a name that means something. My Dgran was Elizabeth but was called Bessie all her life?

What are peoples thoughts on it? Could either be a first name or a middle name?

If you love it you should use it. It only makes me think of frozen Yorkshire puddings though

Aunt bessies yorkshire puds. Or I think Bossie Bessie. Much prefer Elizabeth.

sesquipedalia · 06/12/2020 20:39

Love it as a nn, would use Elizabeth on the BC though

YeahItsJackie · 06/12/2020 20:39

Love it

berrygirlie · 06/12/2020 20:41

(sorry) not entirely sure why, but reminds me somewhat of cows. still quite cute, I wouldn't be put off!

NannyR · 06/12/2020 20:46

I like it for a little girl, I would go for Elizabeth though with Bessie as a pet name.

Viviennemary · 06/12/2020 20:51

It's dreadful. Bessie Bunter. Aunt Bessies puds. Dire.

DramaAlpaca · 06/12/2020 20:52

Lovely on a labrador.

On a human, just no.

Orphlids · 06/12/2020 21:24

I’m afraid it conjures up an image of a thick-set, middle aged, farmer’s wife. Not much sex appeal. On the other hand, I imagine Bessie would have a great sense of humour, and a very kind nature. I can’t imagine a spiteful, horrid Bessie. Bess could sound more sophisticated, and would still be a nod to your gran.

GigantosaurusRex · 06/12/2020 21:25

I love it, I called my grandmother Bessie too!

Thefaceofboe · 06/12/2020 21:31

I love Bessie! It’s on my list but my partner doesn’t like it because of the Yorkshire pudding connection Confused

MotheringShites · 06/12/2020 21:33

I absolutely love Bess as a short form of Elizabeth. Bessie less so. I hear Frank Spencer type connotations (even though I know it was “ooh Betty”).

MotheringShites · 06/12/2020 21:37

And admittedly my love of Bess may be entirely due to the Tom Hardy/Anne-Marie Duff version of Elizabeth I.

HeadPain · 07/12/2020 00:30

I think it's cute, and I don't think of the things other posters said. If this is for first name I'd probably go Elizabeth officially or some other derivative though and use Bessie as a nickname, and there are other nicknames from Elizabeth that she could use depending on what she likes throughout her life. Or you could just put Bessie as a middle name.

Porridgeoat · 07/12/2020 00:38

I love it!!

Porridgeoat · 07/12/2020 00:38

Bess is stunning too

Porridgeoat · 07/12/2020 00:40

Use Bess and you can nick name her Bessie

Marcipex · 07/12/2020 00:49

Bunter.

Elizabeth nnBetsy might be easier to carry off.

midnightstar66 · 07/12/2020 05:15

For some reason I think of a friendly black and white cow when I hear the name. Not sure why but see a pp also has the same cow association so there must be a link.

ladymary86 · 07/12/2020 07:31

Hmmm... food for thought. I was aware of the Yorkshire pudding (and other frozen food stuffs) connection.

I really don't like Elizabeth so I wouldn't want to use the full name in any form, even for the birth certificate.

Bess is fine, Bessie a bit frumpy.

MrMeSeeks · 07/12/2020 08:24

No, sorry i also think of cows

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 07/12/2020 08:26

It makes me think of a farm animal.

MikeUniformMike · 07/12/2020 08:26

Why don't you use Bess as a middle name?

Labobo · 07/12/2020 08:32

It's cute. But it's the name I have in store for my Irish setter dog if I ever get one. :D
