Do you think Dora could be a full first name all on its own? My husband loves it, but I prefer longer names.

Swiper, no swiping!

I echo a pp it's a rather flat beige boring name. Although I suppose you could have fun with aDORAble wordplay. I saw labraDORAble the other day Grin

I really like it, think it’s lovely

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 05/01/2021 16:36

What's wrong with Dora the Explorer? Confused Not exactly a bad reference, she's just a cute children's TV character. I like Dora but LOVE Theodora for a full name

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 05/01/2021 16:40

Also know a little Dora who is 8 and doesn't seem to have had any issues with her name.

emmathedilemma · 05/01/2021 17:23

I know one who's just Dora and another who's Pandora but mostly Dora. I quite like it.

NoSquirrels · 05/01/2021 17:29

I think it's a-dora-ble (ha!) but as soon as you see it or say it "the Explorer" comes to mind and thus I couldn't use it myself. Same for Thomas "the Tank Engine" etc. Nothing wrong with the characters, just too much of an association for me.

Seap · 05/01/2021 19:49

I know an adult Deborah who goes by Dora.

Twinkie01 · 05/01/2021 19:50

Now that fucking song is going round and round in my head 🙄

Firebird83 · 05/01/2021 21:04

It’s cute. I think it’s fine as a standalone name.

CantBeAssed · 05/01/2021 21:16

Ooh noooo!!Shock

SacreBleeeurgh · 05/01/2021 21:20

I like it. Is the Dora the Explorer thing even that big a deal if it does happen? No worse than ‘oh Eleanor, like Eleanor Rigby’ or ‘Idris? As in Elba?’ - people will always think where they might have heard a name before.*

*I grant you it would be different if you were considering a little Adolf....

MercyBodle · 07/01/2021 00:39

Dora is a name on its own and doesn't need to be short for something else. I like neat, strong, shortish names!

Noti23 · 07/01/2021 00:44

Is Dora the Explorer still a thing?

PodgeBod · 07/01/2021 00:49

I like Dora more then the long versions of the name! I think it's adorable. My DD went through a Dora the Explorer phase a couple of years ago and even then toys and merchandise were hard to find and I can't even get the show on demand without paying for it. I really don't think the show will even be on the radar of kids in a couple of years.

Carouselfish · 07/01/2021 01:28

I've got one. By the time she's at school no-one will give two hoots about the explorer. Even if they did its hardly a horrible association. I think it's cute, 1920s (when it was at its height of popularity), spellable, nice meaning, works internationally...etc barely longer alternative Adora?

maddsclairelouise · 07/01/2021 01:32

I personally prefer longer names and then I think you could get the best of both worlds in that you get the longer name you want but you also keep 'Dora', a lovely classic name by the way.
I really like;
Dorethea
Dorelia
Isadora
Theadora
that can all have the nickname 'Dora' xx

Edgeoftheledge · 07/01/2021 01:39

All i can think is dora dora the explorer

maddsclairelouise · 07/01/2021 01:59

Theadora
Dorethea
Dorelia
Isadora
are all beautiful suggestions for a longer name!

HeadlessGummyBears · 07/01/2021 06:08

Dora is lovely!

All the full name options are great and have lovely potential nicknames as well. For example:

  • Theodora - Dory, Dora, Teddy/Teddi & Thea,
  • Isadora - Addy, Isa, Izzy, Dory, Dora & Sadie
  • Doreen - Rene/Reen, Dory & Dora
  • Dorothea - Dee, Deedee, Dodie, Dolly, Dory, Dora, Dot, Dottie & Thea
Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 07/01/2021 17:06

Beautiful name...totally ruined by that awful girl with a map

partyatthepalace · 08/01/2021 00:57

I like it, but it was originally a short form - and often still is - of Dorothea, Theodora or Isadora - so why don’t you use one of those.

Leonora or Eleanora or even Diana would also work.

The Dora the Explorer association is cool!

LittleTiger007 · 08/01/2021 11:40

Dora the explorer.

MimiDaisy11 · 08/01/2021 12:48

I don't see what's wrong with Dora the Explorer? I think being an explorer is good. What bullying can really come from that? It's like not naming your child Ben because of Ben 10 - if that's still a thing.
