Short name vs long name+nickname - What are your opinions?

What are your thoughts on this? In general, I prefer longer names that can then be shortened in a few ways. That way, the child can sort of choose what nickname he/she would like to use. Also, when the child grows up, he/she has the option of using a longer form of the name. So the name can age with the child. My husband likes shorter names, Like Della & Darcy, that don't need nns. What do you think?

I prefer long names. Just personal choice. I don't mind short names such as Emma, but I would never chose a nickname type name such as Tommy, I would use Thomas.

All of my friends as a teenager seemed to be Jennifer, and I loved that they could be Jennifer, Jenny or Jen and swore I'd pick similar for my kids. My favourite girls name is Elizabeth which obviously has loads of shortenings but DH doesn't like it so we never used it. I would've used Beth day to day.

But we both randomly liked a two syllable name when expecting DD1, and it has no obvious shortenings. Obviously it's two syllables so you could but it doesn't tend to be and we don't shorten it ever.

DD2 has a three syllable name, it has a few shortenings but they're a reach. We use them occasionally among ourselves but she's very much the full name. So neither girl got my Jennifer, Jenny, Jen scenario, simply because we liked names that didn't apply to.

I chose short names for all my children, they aren't called a shortened version of their names at all. The youngest is mostly called by his middle name at home though.

I'm so torn on this. Both my son's have names that you can't really shorten. It was never my intention just names me liked.
For girls I love long names that can be played around with but I find so many beautiful names are ruined for me when shortened. Gabriella, Alexandra, Arabella, all beautiful and it's such a shame when someone chooses them but they are never used in full.
So in that sense I would rather have a Skye or a Pearl or an Autumn than a Gabby or Alex or Izzy.

Prefer longer names that have shortened options. DH insists on using the full name. I find it interesting to see what they are called outside the home.

I think 'each to their own'

And you need to negotiate with your DH to find a name that you both like.
