Does your child suit their name?

I had quite a few names on my shortlist for DD, some quite simple and some a bit less traditional. I was thinking today how much she suits her name and I couldn’t imagine her now as an Emily or Charlotte or Clementine or Valentina. I remember being disappointed that DH didn’t like any of the less traditional/not so commonly heard names but now I’m glad.

Do you think your child suits their name now they are a bit older? Do you regret your choice, do you wish you’d called them something a bit more adventurous maybe or something more mainstream, now that their personality is coming out?

My dd has her name written all over her (Molly) Although I do sometimes wish I'd given it more thought. I think often with names it can be like being in a restaurant and you see someone else's meal and you think. I wish I'd have ordered that. Grin

petitdonkey · 04/12/2020 11:24

One of my daughters is Ava (she’s 14) - I remember being really annoyed that it became so popular but it suits her so well and I can’t imagine her being called anything else!

Sorrytmipic · 04/12/2020 11:26

I went through a time around six months where dd just REALLY looked like an Eliza. I was pretty upset that I hadn't called her it.

Now she does suit her name, and I never have been particularly fond of Eliza anyway Hmm I blame hormones.

Takethewinefromtheswine · 04/12/2020 11:30

Mine doesn't really, but her father changed his mind about our planned name and so we had to find a compromise that I wasn't ever 100% about. Having said that, she isn't like my preferred name either!! Her name is quite girly and she is very alternative and edgy, not girly at all.

theruffles · 04/12/2020 11:39

My DD really suits her name. It was the only one DH and I agreed on but it works perfectly for her. I can't imagine her now being a Clara or Lucy, which were the other names on my shortlist.

Gemma888 · 04/12/2020 11:58

I think so! Can’t imagine my eldest being anything else for a moment. My youngest, DH didn’t like my first choice so I could equally imagine them being that name, but I think the one we went with really suits them.

MrsSnarget · 04/12/2020 12:30

I have to admit DD (12) doesn't suit her name and never has. Sad Major naming regrets.

It's a beautiful name but it's all wrong for her and annoyingly very popular too. We were living abroad when she was born and had no idea just how popular it was. We have a tricky surname so we wanted a known first name but it's just too well known.

The name I always liked way before I had children would have suited her perfectly but it end up being my nieces name so that wasn't an option. We always call DD by a nick name but we'd never say to her we don't think her name suits.

The good news is she loves her name.

Carrotcakey · 04/12/2020 12:39

My oldest does and my youngest doesn’t. My youngest was 5weeks early and the name choice, although a beautiful name was a bit rushed and I think others on our shortlist would have suited her better. I think she will grow into it though, it’s just a grown up name for a cheeky toddler!

Sausagedog1 · 04/12/2020 13:13

My eldest does (Rory) he really couldn't be called anything else.
My youngest (Cillian) I felt pressured into naming and I still struggle to associate with him. I feel tremendous guilt and sadness about it. He's still a baby. I hope he likes it when he grows up.

Firebird83 · 04/12/2020 15:54

Mine looks like his name, but he’s not laid-back enough to suit it personality-wise! He would suit Jack, I think.

Would you ever consider renaming him? There are loads that have done it! They're both beautiful names FWIW.
Sausagedog1 · 04/12/2020 16:47

@kidscreatemess thank you that's really kind. We talked about it a lot when he was a couple of months old. My DH was really disappointed as he loves the name and my eldest loves it too. He calls him little Cillybean.
The trouble is DH really hates my favourite names and all our compromise names were so meh so we stuck with it.
Now I have baby imprints made with his name on to match his brothers and I have a necklace too, it would feel too sad to change it I think.
I do think it's a lovely name but the constant mispronunciation is worse than I expected, even once people have been told which is upsetting.

Aila1994 · 05/12/2020 01:11

@Sausagedog1 if it makes you feel any better, I absolutely love the name Cillian and think he’ll love it as he grows up!

FairfaxAikman · 05/12/2020 01:17

DS's name was my second choice as DH vetoed the first.
He really wouldn't have suited the first one, but totally suits his actual name.

dhisreadingmypostsagain · 05/12/2020 01:49

Both my DS totally suit their names. One of my dogs though.. I got out voted and I still use my secret name for her 😂

hazandduck · 05/12/2020 02:14

My oldest DC is Matilda and it was our favourite name for years before we had her, I always imagined her having a cool nickname ‘Matty,’ or the cute ‘Tilly.’ She is 3 now and somehow she is a Tilda/Tildy/Tilds. And will not put up with anyone calling her Tilly. “I not Tilly I Tilds!” And you know what, it suits her to the ground 🤣 Whilst pregnant we really loved the name Belle and had set on it pretty much but she was born and it did not suit her whatsoever. It wouldn’t suit her now either.

My second Dd is only 10 months, again we loved Belle, then she was born and we couldn’t call her that. She suits her name (Cleo), it’s soft and round like her! I think (hope) she’ll grow up well with it too.

Do you ever meet people and mentally rename them because they do not suit their name whatsoever?! I do it all the time. Our accountant i have renamed Sebastian and honestly I cannot remember his real name but it doesn’t suit him 🤣

babynamelover · 05/12/2020 06:46

Yes they both do but awhile go I went through a phase of feeling we should have called #2 Ramona the other choice as #1 has a more unusual name than #2.

Sausagedog1 · 05/12/2020 07:15

@Aila1994 what a lovely post to wake up to. Thanks so much, definitely makes me feel better Smile

Peeteea · 05/12/2020 08:42

My daughter’s name suits her perfectly I think, I can’t imagine anything else on her!

LastChristmas20 · 05/12/2020 09:25

Yes my DD suits hers perfectly.

An unusual, beautiful name for a beautiful (inside and out) unusual girl. It's French and since having her we've been to France a lot more and so that's made it more perfect too.

Although also she'd have suited our second choice (Pearl) and sometimes I do wish we'd chosen that as people outside of France would've been able to say/spell it more easily.

ArmchairCritics · 05/12/2020 09:31

We changed DD2’s name when she was a baby as it became infinitely clear by the time she was 4/5 months old that she absolutely was not ‘an ’ and I struggled to even say her name out loud. Thankfully DH agreed and it’s been completely accepted by everyone (except bloody MIL initially of course...) with no drama. Absolutely delighted we changed it and she suits her new name SO well.

jennymac31 · 05/12/2020 09:57

My DD definitely suits her name and we hadn't considered any other names so very happy that it fits her personality perfectly. With my DS, it took a little time to get used to his name as it wasn't my 1st choice (but it was my DH's 1st choice). Very glad we didn't go with my 1st choice as it was already a popular name when DS was born and it seems to have grown in popularity. Am always a bit relieved whenever I look on the top 100 baby names and DC's names are rarely listed.

Peccary · 05/12/2020 20:08

DD has a very feminine name, she was a chunk of a baby with wild hair, someone even commented "what a delicate name for such a big baby". She has grown in to a willowy 3 year old with quite delicate features and a head full of curls so it definitely suits her now
