@YoniAndGuy

Another issue with Damien (apart from the obvious horrible one!) is the short form.

Damo?
Dame?
Dam?

None of them are good! Remember, it's really the short form which will probably end up being that everyday part of your lives and what you associate with your child and what most people call them. Would you rather live with a Jonty/Jon, a Nick/Nicky, or a Dame/Damo?

Yes I definitely don't like any of those nn's for Damien

Good call

Tobias

Chilldonaldchill · 05/12/2020 22:09

In order:
Tobias - love this
Gabriel - the next 3 are all great and I like them equally
Jonathan
Dominic
Nicholas - it's ok. A bit dull.
Damien - sorry but this is awful

Bruce2 · 05/12/2020 23:26

So hubby threw Sebastian into the mix tonight

And now has decided Tobias isn't too bad after all Hmm Gabriel still an absolute no for him.
Honestly!

If anyone still on this thread and can be bothered offering an opinion

Sebastian...what's your thoughts?

OP posts:
Bruce2 · 05/12/2020 23:29

I'm still for Jonathan or Dominic

Tobias, Gabriel and Sebastian all have a similar tone to me. I can’t really explain what that is. If new parents introduced their baby with one of their names, I assume they’ve prioritised a classy, sophisticated name. Those blokes don’t sound like they become tradesmen, more like suave businessmen. (But that’s all built on stereotypes really - I’m sure there are some classy, sophisticated tradesmen out there).

So I don’t think badly of these names, although Gabriel would be a definite no for me too. Sebastian is common enough that people know it, can spell and pronounce it, but you don’t meet loads.

ReeseWitherfork · 06/12/2020 08:36

“Introduced their baby with one of those names”

Sausagedog1 · 06/12/2020 08:42

I like Sebastien because I like Seb and Sebby.
I know one who is called Zeb or Zebby.
I think it is cooler than Jonathan. Would you shorten the names? I'm not a big fan of Jonathan but really like Jonny.
I do like Dominic but really struggling to think past Cummings at the moment!

emilybrontescorsett · 06/12/2020 08:46

I think a lot of men don't like Gabriel because of the Gay connotation possible name calling. I don't like Sebastian it just screams posh, wet boy to me and I always hear bastard when ever I hear that name. Tobias is lovely but again very posh. I only know Tobys which I don't think is as nice. Tobias for me will always be the fabulous Oliver Tobias in Luke's Kingdom. Was Tobias originally a surname?

emilybrontescorsett · 06/12/2020 08:47

Also I can't imagine at all why anyone would use Dominic now. The name is tainted beyond redemption.

DaisyMaureen · 06/12/2020 08:48

I like Tobias

Standrewsschool · 06/12/2020 08:51

I don’t think the name is tainted at all. It’s hardly Adolf or Damian, but a good classic name. There may be politicians with that name now, but any association, if any, will fade over time.

I partly regret not using the name Leo, which I was considering as it was a more current version of my grandfathers name (granddads name usage wasn’t in vogue then). Rejected it because Tony Blair named his son Leo at that time. Now, hardly anyone remembers that link.

user1493494961 · 06/12/2020 08:53

Would choose Nicholas or Gabriel but they are all lovely names, except Damien!

emilybrontescorsett · 06/12/2020 09:52

It may fade over time but that isn't helpful for anyone pregnant now is it?
Dominic Cummings is an absolute self entitled twat, and that is putting it politely. I have no doubt what so ever that if he had lived and worked with Adolf Hitler he would have gone along with whatever was proposed. He is no better if you actually study his actions and words. The son of an ex politician is hardly on a parr. You also have the useless, over privileged Dominic Rabb to be reminded of too. 'Celebtities' using names do have an impact. It's only opinion but that is what the op is asking for by posting on here.

ReeseWitherfork · 06/12/2020 09:58

Dominic Cummings and Dominic Raab didn’t even enter my brain on assessing the name.

VenusClapTrap · 06/12/2020 10:11

Jonathan nn Jonty is my favourite. I do like Sebastian, but not too keen on Seb.

Bruce2 · 06/12/2020 10:39

Thanks everyone

I like Jon or Jonty but not Jonny for some reason...maybe not really thought too much about it. Although if his friends at school called him that it wouldn't bother me. Pretty relaxed on the nn thing overall.

That's a good point about Leo/Dominic

Everyone will associate something different

Some people who like these politicians won't mind it, some people will hate it.

I have an incredibly trendy "80's" name which died out in early 90's never to be heard again hence why I like traditional classic names as people can instantly put an age on me my names that common and dated.
Always wanted something that wouldn't date rather than anything else - nothing to do with political parties or films or anything. :)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/12/2020 10:59

How about James or Alexander. You can't really get more classic or timeless that those.

MercyBodle · 06/12/2020 11:31

I love (in this order):
Nicholas - love Nico for short
Dominic - also Nico for short
Tobias
Jonathan
Sebastian

I strongly dislike Damien - just dislike the sounds and the 70s vibe I think. I'm not keen on Gabriel - it does feel religious, Catholic, to me, and I don't like Gabe.

CatRamsey · 06/12/2020 12:02

Gabriel then Tobias

YoniAndGuy · 07/12/2020 13:34

I love the name Sebastian but I wouldn't use it because I don't like Seb very much. It is one of those names that rarely flows well with a surname I think. I knew a Seb Parkes years ago and it was so hard to say his name without it turning into Separkes. But I would bet his parents thought, ahh, Sebastian Parkes, works well!

Just something jerky and hard to say in the middle of a sentence about it.

Jonathan remains my top choice, no doubt about it.
