Reverie?

What do you think of this name? Heard it on a list and thought it was beautiful but is it too out there? Bare in mind I have a Durham accent but I think it sounds fine? We’re now going between this and Aurora. Which one do you prefer?

Aurora. Reverie is way too airy-fairy; it literally means ‘daydream’.

PigsInHeaven · 02/12/2020 16:52

Do you know what it means, OP? As well as suggesting dreaminess, it does also sound like the name a branding consultancy would suggest for an aspirational brand of lingerie.

Pemba · 02/12/2020 16:58

It's not a name (or shouldn't be) because, as a pp said, it's a well known word for something like 'day dream'. It will sound daft. Aurora is nice, and an actual name.

Respectabitch · 02/12/2020 17:01

It just makes you come off like you didn't know what the word means.

TeenPlusTwenties · 02/12/2020 17:03

I think people will think you said 'Beverly'

This is a list of associated names I found on "nameberry". Some are absolutely crazy (IMO) but this is what nameberry associates with Reverie. I like Aurora. It's your choice of course though :)

Not a fan of Reverie, feels too MUCH like a word and a rather cheesy one at that. Sorry Op!

Much prefer Aurora.

IMHO most babyname websites are ill-informed rubbish.

Quite apart from anything else, the list includes names that have been male for 2000 years and more eg Galen, Tarquin, Florian, Geoffrey (that one maybe for 1500 years) as well as proper nouns (Harbor?? Timber?? Prairie??)
Just why?

2tired2bewitty · 02/12/2020 17:24

I’m in Teesside and I don’t think it sounds nice in the kinds of accents she’s going to meet everyday if you live in durham. They will put too much stress on the last syllable and not enough on the first.

Aurea · 02/12/2020 17:25

How about my username? 🤣 It means golden in Latin.

DrDetriment · 02/12/2020 17:25

It's not good I'm afraid. I immediately think the syblings would be dreamy, sleepy and airy fairy.

MerchantOfVenom · 02/12/2020 17:27

Not keen, way too gimmicky.

I mean, yes, it’s a lovely word - the way it sounds, and the meaning.

But it’s just silly as a name.

Ellmau · 02/12/2020 18:43

Aurora is lovely.

Pinkroses87 · 02/12/2020 18:48

I’d have serious words with my parents if they’d called me Whimsy (just going through that list!)

Absolutely true but Reverie itself is quite an interesting / odd name to pick anyway as well as being a noun. Name choices are shifting!
Myohmy123 · 02/12/2020 19:05

It sounds like how Scooby Doo would pronounce Beverley

^ just spat my tea across the room! 😂😂😂

ODFOx · 02/12/2020 19:40

Not Reverie.
Aurora is quite popular at the moment. If you want something which sounds similar but isn't so common have you considered Harmony or Rhapsody?

user1493494961 · 02/12/2020 19:41

It's a word, not a name.

Reverie is one of my guilty pleasure names. I think it's beautiful, with a lovely sound and meaning. I wouldn't be brave enough to use it in the first name spot (luckily judging by the comments on this thread!) but I think it would make a lovely, unusual middle name.

Aurora is fine - popular and pretty enough, but I understand why you want to use Reverie (and I don't think it's any odder than a lot of word names out there eg. Saga, Hope, Liberty, Mercy etc - they just happen to have been used as names longer so we are used to them!).

One thing to note though is that Aurora has obvious nn's (Rory/Aura), but Reverie could get shortened to Rev (rather than Ev/Ever).

nocoolnamesleft · 02/12/2020 20:14

Trying to remember in which fantasy novel Reverie was the name of the evil shadow world of faerie...

cameocat · 02/12/2020 20:31

It could be shortened to Rev as in Reverend

Topseyt · 02/12/2020 20:43

No. Not for me. It means daydreamer.

abbie777 · 02/12/2020 20:52

I don’t know any Aurora’s in my area, I think we’re gonna go with it that though because it’s not wayyyy out there and everyone’s heard of it, but it’s not super common.
