alexdgr8 · 25/11/2020 19:41

no. i wouldn't recommend it.

Oneandabean · 25/11/2020 19:42

Apparently it’s been popular since I had my DD 9 years ago, I haven’t met one so far

Felixfrank · 25/11/2020 19:46

@alexdgr8 why would you not recommend?

Do you like it op?
Does it matter if it’s popular?
I don’t know many

MrsGrindah · 25/11/2020 19:49

Well everyone’s going to associate it with Harry and Meghan son. Not a problem for me but just pointing it out.

Felixfrank · 25/11/2020 19:49

@pilates yes it is def growing on me. I read people think of it as a ‘twee’ name but the only Archie’s I know are old men (family)

@MrsGrindah

I did not think of that to be honest but surely that is not the case with all little George’s and Charlotte’s which to me are far more popular

MrsGrindah · 25/11/2020 19:55

Course it is! They are very famous people so people will think of their names. Not saying that’s good or bad but it will pop up in people’s minds. Can you hear the name Diana without thinking of Princess Di. I’m only bring it up because you were asking about popularity

Yennefer19 · 25/11/2020 19:58

Since Harry and Meghan used the name it’s actually taken a sharp decline in the charts so now is a perfect time to use it if you want a less popular name.

Enough4me · 25/11/2020 20:02

I like the name, but unfortunately expect royalArchie will feature heavily in media for the rest of his life. That would put me off the name. Imagine being asked, "Archie, of you named him after H&M's Archie?" on repeat.

Whatsyourflava · 25/11/2020 20:38

I love the name Archie @Felixfrank
One of my favourites.

I only know of one Archie via a friend of a friend but had never made the Harry and Meghan connection at all. Like you say, there's plenty of Charlottes George's and Louis.

Think of it another way - if you know of any 30+ year olds called William, you'd never assume they were named after Prince William would you! The royal family seem to deliberately pick fairly well established names and if you look in the charts Archie was already in the top 30 names immediately before Harry and Meghan picked it

Have a look at the graph below which uses the official ONS data so you can see the numbers of Archie's over the past 25 years according to official registered births:

I know a 17 year old Archie, one of about 13 and another who's 9. It's popular but there don't seem to be absolutely loads. It's my favourite of the "old man chic" names eg Alfie, Ronnie, Stanley etc

garlictwist · 26/11/2020 00:50

I didn't know Barry and Meghan's son was caked Archie. It doesn't sound very...regal.

garlictwist · 26/11/2020 00:51

@garlictwist

I didn't know Barry and Meghan's son was caked Archie. It doesn't sound very...regal.
And nor does Barry Grin
Sparks2 · 26/11/2020 00:54

I work in numerous schools as a supply teacher and haven't met many Archies at all so it isn't too popular. I think it's lovely for a child and man but not to keen on it for a teen.

PinGwyn · 26/11/2020 00:57

I forgot about the royal Archie.

I'm more inclined to link it with the Inventor who can make absolutely anything from yogurt pots in Balamory but I don't think that's a thing anymore 😂

Felixfrank · 26/11/2020 07:01

To be honest I did not even think about H&M, it did not cross my mind.. it’s just a name my husband loves.

Plus they’re just people they cannot own a name so the total connection would not put me off

festivebug · 26/11/2020 07:59

Archie is a great name! Smile

festivebug · 26/11/2020 08:02

@MrsGrindah I don't think so. I wouldn't even think of the royals if I heard Charlotte or George and definitely wouldn't with Archie to be honest. Like you said though, it's not a bad thing anyway.Smile

MimiDaisy11 · 26/11/2020 08:31

I wouldn't think it had any connection to the Royals either like I don't when I see children called Charlotte etc. I'm not a royalist though.

june2007 · 26/11/2020 08:38

It,s ok but it,s too popular and be ready for Archbishop, arch deacon, archibald (or like one child i know simply bish).

LooneyLovefood · 26/11/2020 08:42

I was a primary teacher for many years and have always been in jobs around children of all ages. But yet I've ever only known of one Archie and he is now 2 and a half. I've met dozens and dozens of Alfies but despite Archie seemingly being a popular name, I never hear it.

I wouldn't let the royal connection put you off. If you like a name then use it.

mamablondie33 · 26/11/2020 22:08

I know two both aged 3. That said, I don’t think it’s overdone especially.

MercyBodle · 27/11/2020 04:09

Lovely name, but asking how popular a name is is like asking how long is a piece of string. You can check for the popularity stats for your region, and from that make a guess as to the likelihood of more in your child's class. But it's only a guess.

And for some people a top 5 name is popular while for others a top 100 name is popular. And, some people like having popular names.

Personally, I don't know any little Archies, but I'm not sure how that helps you.

spiderlight · 27/11/2020 13:01

We had the best dog in the world and he was called Archie, so I love it! I don't know any little human Archies so I don't think it's too popular.
