Freya.. how popular? Is that a bad thing?

Myself and DP seem to have settled on the name Freya. It goes will with our other two children’s names and it’s possibly the only name we both like.

I think it’s pretty, not too frilly and not too long either.
I also like that Freya (or Freyja, though I wouldn’t spell it like that) is a goddess.

So, the only negative thing I can think of is that it’s a bit more popular than I thought. I don’t know any Freya’s so maybe it’s not as popular in my area as it is in others.
How popular is it for everyone else? Would you say it’s nice enough to overlook? I find that it’s a name that isn’t trying to be different to it’s not as bad that it’s a bit more popular.

I like it. I actually don't know any little ones called Freya, although I know it's high in the baby name charts.

CoalCraft · 25/11/2020 10:40

I know of a few Freyas but not many at all. It's a lot less popular than Ava, Olivia, Isabelle and the like. I think it's fine to use.

Nothing much wrong with a popular name anyway - generally they're popular because they're nice!

Sunbird24 · 25/11/2020 10:44

I only know one grown up Freya, I really like it.

Whatthedoodle · 25/11/2020 11:08

Thank you! I have searched other Freya posts on mumsnet that have had a lot of people saying it’s really common but I suppose if we don’t know any then that’s the main thing!

I only know 1 10 year old called Freya

Twizbe · 25/11/2020 11:10

We considered it for our DD. I know one who is about 4 and I've heard it a couple of times in the playground. No where near as popular as Evie/ Ava and the like

emmathedilemma · 25/11/2020 11:10

It entered the top 10 in England & Wales last year and seems to have featured in the top 10 in scotland for a few years, so I guess it's fairly popular. I really like it.

My niece is Freya and DD has a Freya in her class.
I don’t see it as a pretty name but that means that be because the 2 I know are firmly “tom-boy” types so I have different associations.
It’s a lovely name OP. Congratulations

SendHelp30 · 25/11/2020 11:11

But that might be *

popcorndiva · 25/11/2020 11:14

Its reasonably popular i know 2 under 2, but not as popular as isabella, Olivia, Grace, ava , evie etc

Chilldonaldchill · 25/11/2020 12:28

I know four Freyas who are 17-18 and one who is 15. I don't know any others. They are all from North London.

springtimeinbognor · 25/11/2020 12:30

I have a Freya. She's 23. The only other one I've come across was also in her school year, of 200.

springtimeinbognor · 25/11/2020 12:31

Oh, and obviously, I think its a gorgeous name!

KittenCalledBob · 25/11/2020 12:32

I only know two - one 8yo and one in her 20s.

Thegirlhasnoname · 25/11/2020 12:35

I know 3 under 4 so reasonably popular in my area (and I don’t know many people!!)

As long as you don’t go around to people saying that your DD has the same name as the Greek goddess of beauty (😐) because she is called Freya then you should be fine 😂

skankingpiglet · 25/11/2020 12:57

I think it's a lovely name. I know 2: a 3yo and 6yo.

Babyfg · 25/11/2020 13:01

I've got a two year old Freya. We've heard people calling other Freya's in the park but never actually met or know one. I love the name. It's girly but not frilly.

rooarsome · 25/11/2020 13:04

I know 4 Freya's, but don't let popularity put you off. It's a beautiful name.

LostAcre · 25/11/2020 13:05

It’s a nice name.

I know one or two primary school aged Freya’s.

Metallicalover · 25/11/2020 13:10

I think it's a lovely name! I know one 1 year old and one 13 year old. I would go with it 😊

DeeandraReynolds · 25/11/2020 13:13

It's popular, but tbh, that doesn't mean that much these days. I don't think we have a single Olivia or Isabelle in dc1's year 1 class for example. We do have a Freya, but we also have loads of extremely rare names. Names I'd never even heard of before. So it wouldn't put me off. The only names I'd avoid for popularity reasons are things like Amelia, Oliver, Jack and Harry, which have been top ten ish for decades now.

Fwiw, I think it's a very nice name.

Chimbleys · 26/11/2020 00:36

It's a beautiful name. My cousin has a 14 year old Freya.

DramaAlpaca · 26/11/2020 00:41

I've only ever met one, she's in her 20s.

It's a nice choice. It's strong and feminine without being frilly.

Kanaloa · 26/11/2020 00:57

I only know of one Freya, my dd’s school friend who is 5, so I think it must not be that popular in my area. It’s a nice name I think, and could suit any type of person.

garlictwist · 26/11/2020 01:03

I know one adult Freyja (spelled that way) but no kids.
