Thoughts on my list of girls’ names?

So far I have:

Lois - DH vetoed though
Helena
Erin - DH also not keen
Juliet (my current front runner, DH a bit meh about it)

DH likes Mary and Alice. I think Mary could be a bit grown up for a little kid, and it doesn’t go with my preferred middle name which is Margaret. Alice is just a bit forgettable IMO.

Any thoughts or alternative suggestions?

Her older brother is called Douglas if that’s helpful!

@Logoplanter

I am a Helena. Everyone mispronounces it if they only see it written down. I then have to decide whether to correct them or just leave it because I won't see them again. It is awful. Worse yet is if you do correct them and they still mispronounce it (like one of my line managers 😡) Don't do it to your child please.
This is really helpful, thanks

Lois - I don't love Lois but it's ok. It's a mouthful with Douglas though
Helena - this is gorgeous and my favourite from your list
Erin - really don't like this. It's a nothing name for me
Juliet - it's ok.
Mary - I can imagine this being incredibly cute on a little girl. I've not come across any small Marys. I think Mary Margaret works ok but you could add in another eg Mary Juliet Margaret to break it up
Alice - I really like Alice

My favourite is Helena but Mary or Alice would be next for me

CaffiSaliMali · 19/11/2020 08:20

Douglas is a fabulous name, I've always liked it. It's a family name for me too.

I love Juliet, pretty but not cutesy and it's well known but not overused (I believe it's currently 590 in the E&W charts).

Juliet Margaret - gorgeous.

Lois - Welsh or English pronunciation? ie Loyce or low-iss? Both nice.
Helena - I like both pronunciations but a lot of people will use the one you don't choose so weigh up if it bothers you or not
Erin - it's nice but perhaps a little plain compared to Douglas
Mary - it's nice but I agree with PPs that you need a 2nd middle name before Margaret e.g. Mary Alice Margaret
Alice - it's nice and goes well with Margaret

Purplekitchen · 19/11/2020 08:42

I quite like all your suggestions except Mary, the most boring name in the world imo.
My favourite is Elizabeth - gorgeous, classic, lots of nn potential.

recreationalcalpol · 19/11/2020 09:00

As much as would like another middle name before Margaret, she’s already getting my surname as a second middle name and I think three middle names is pushing it slightly. Might just have to have another baby Wink

Love Mary Margaret. Your little M&M. I know a now 3 year old Mary. She is a delight, and since she was born I've fallen in love with the name. Everyone thought it was a beautiful name and so unheard of now, so definitely received well.

cloverbug · 19/11/2020 09:28

@Mish85 little M&M, that's so cute!

MimiDaisy11 · 19/11/2020 09:47

I wouldn't worry about alliteration with the first and middle name. It's uncommon for someone's full name to be used to address them. Though I think Mary Margaret goes well together.

I like your list but not so keen on Lois.
I think Mary is due for a revival as it's a nice name and I think it's cute on a little girl.

Firebird83 · 19/11/2020 11:34

Mary Margaret or Helena Margaret

SeaKingdom · 19/11/2020 11:37

I think Mary Margaret goes really well together - Mary Margaret is Snow White's name in Once Upon A Time.

Seriouslymole · 19/11/2020 11:41

Megan is also a derivative of Margaret.

I love Juliet! It wouldn't get shortened to Julie.

3rdNamechange · 19/11/2020 11:46

I like Eleanor it's not mispronounced as much as Helena.
Alice is sweet , I think Mary is a bit old fashioned.

LemonsYellow · 19/11/2020 12:03

Mary is fabulous. It goes well alongside Margaret. It’s not the same name. I like Helena too, but I think Mary is both chic and cool. Juliet is OK but Julia is better. Alice is fine but a bit boring. Not keen on Lois.

myneighboursarerude · 19/11/2020 12:06

Helena is stunning and definitely goes with Douglas - they sound like a pair from a Victorian novel. Is he Douglas or is he Dougie/Doug?

myneighboursarerude · 19/11/2020 12:07

Is second the PP Julia is beautiful.

CharityPecksniff · 19/11/2020 12:08

Lois - no
Helena - love it
Erin - no
Juliet - love it
Mary - love it
Alice - nice

Just be aware that there are at least two common pronunciations of Juliet and at least three of Helena.

If you count areas that drop their Hs, then there are six.

mintich · 19/11/2020 12:15

I really like Erin and Helena

MikeUniformMike · 19/11/2020 13:38

Lois - ok just a bit nothingy
Helena - ok. I prefer Helen
Erin - harsh sounding.
Juliet - ok but I don't like Jules.

Mary and Alice - considered both for DD. DD3 would be Alice.

Her older brother is called Douglas - like.

I'd say Helen but www.helenanddouglas.org.uk/

kezziethecat · 19/11/2020 13:43

Love Alice and Helena

SofiaVergara · 19/11/2020 13:45

I went to school with Helena and worked with another one and both are absolute Trollops who are both bullies and generally nasty girls, so that alone puts me off that name. As another poster has pointed out, it's the whole helayna/heleena debate too.

I love Lois and Mary :)

Spied · 19/11/2020 13:50

Mary Margaret sounds like a nun.
Sister Mary MargaretGrin sorry.
I love Alice.
Alice Margaret would be my choice.

PabloHoneyBee · 19/11/2020 14:10

Another vote for Mary (sorry op)! I love it and it goes so well with Douglas. Both a bit vintage and unusual, but still established names, not nicknames.

Coffeeandcake1 · 19/11/2020 14:21

I like Juliet, it was on our list of girls names too although we were spelling it Juliette because I like the potential nn Ettie. I also think Ettie would sound good with Douglas!

TeddyDidIt · 19/11/2020 14:27

I like Helena and Juliet

recreationalcalpol · 19/11/2020 16:00

Oh god, I was coming round to Mary and now I can’t get the Sister Mary Margaret thing out of my head Grin
