Lottie as nickname for Violet

Hi

I really like the name Lottie but am reluctant for that to be her name on the birth certificate as it feels a nickname. I'm not so keen on Charlotte or Carlotta so thought Violet could be a nice 'long version name'. I prefer Lottie than Vi as a nickname.

I know Lettie might be a more natural fit, but I just don't like it as much.

Do you think Lottie is an OK nickname for someone with the full name Violet? Or should I just put Lottie as their main name?

Why are people so hung up on being able to get from Violet to Lottie? It doesn't matter one bit! There are no laws about nicknames having to bear a resemblance to the real name in everyone's minds 😂

I have a friend who goes by a name that's extremely different to her real name - I can't put it here as it's very, very unusual - a long name in another language. But she has used her "nickname" for education, personal and professional purposes throughout her whole life.

I think you all need to stop making up pretend rules for the OP to stick to.

Obviously there aren't any rules, but I am assuming that the op wants a name which would naturally get the nickname Lottie, because that's what she asked you see .

If not, then hell, call her Rebecca or Elizabeth or Alexandra or anything you like and call her Lottie. Might be a wee bit confusing when she starts school but there are no laws against it as you say.

If you really like Lottie I would just put that on the birth certificate I'm not sure why people are so hung up on putting longer names when they aren't going to be used anyway

I adore both Violet and Lottie and think that Lottie works fine as a nickname for Violet.

Doesn’t really work IMO. People will assume she is called Charlotte, and you might have to explain it to people a few times, if that doesn’t matter to you then go for it.

Lots of different opinions! I guess we could just put Lottie on the birth certificate. When I think about it I don’t know why I’m so hung up on having a long version name to be honest. I think it’s just something I’ve internalised from somewhere

People bang on about the long name thing on MN but I honestly can't imagine any scenario where it will make one jot of difference if her official name is Lottie. Especially when you think about the kind of names that are fashionable and common amongst her generation, she will blend right in.

If you want to use Violet just say from day one: This is Violet, known as Lottie. People will follow your lead. My daughter goes by a name that isn’t the traditional diminutive of her BC name and no one has ever questioned it or called her anything different.

I think it’s too much of a stretch. Just put Lottie on the birth certificate, it’s an absolutely fine name in its own right.

Don’t. She will so likely end up as Vi which is hideous. Never plan a name around a nickname, you don’t get to control it.

I know a Lottie who is a Violet.

Violet will become Vi or Vile.

Lottie is a different name altogether and often short for Carlotta, Charlotte etc.

This thread makes me think of Agatha Christie's "A murder is announced" where (spoilers) the whole Lottie/Lettie name thing is very central to the plot!
