Sabrina? Miles?

Hi, we're expecting baby no.2 - not sure if we're having a boy or girl. Our daughter is called Nia, which is a Welsh name. I love Welsh names and there are loads of beautiful ones out there, but either my DH dislikes my suggestions or the pronunciation just wouldn't sound right (we live in England), so I think we'll probably go for a Welsh middle name, but head in a different direction for first names this time.

So, the current favourite for a girl is Sabrina. Celtic origins, associated with the River Severn (I grew up near the Severn Estuary). It sounds melodic and magical to my ears, and is a well-known but underused name. 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' definitely springs to mind, but I don't think it's a terrible association, plus I know a girl called Sabrina and never really made that connection with her. My main concern is that the name sounds a bit too dated / 90s, or is possibly a bit too frilly / girly?

Second choice is Phoebe - beautiful name, but feels like a bit of a safe / boring choice? Quite popular. Other names I like but aren't quite right, for various reasons, include: Iris, Iona, Fern, Imogen, Sylvie / Sylvia, Ariadne, Liv, Daphne, Ada, Lucy, Camille / Camilla, Cleo, Thora, Kerenza, May - anything else I might like?

Our current favourite name for a boy is Miles. DH is a huge jazz fan and loves Miles Davis. Wasn't sure at first, but it's really growing on me. Classic but underused. Can't really think of any other boys' names I love. A few I quite like, but they don't seem right - Finley / Fin, Fraser, Jack, George, Orson, Ioan, Dylan...

Any thoughts appreciated x

Sylvie, Iris and Lucy are lovely.

IHaveAGreyLamp · 15/11/2020 10:06

I love Sabrina! Not keen on the others on your list, sorry. How about Dolores?

Miles is also lovely, underused like you say. Not as common as the others you’ve listed.

Sylvie, Iris and Lucy are lovely.
Yep, they're beautiful names, but we can't use them - they're the names of family members and / or the children of good friends. Just trying to give people an idea of the kind of names I like x

Glad you like them 😊 Quite like the sound of Dolores, but think it would get shortened to Dolly!

Ah, I see.

I think Sabrina is nice, but it's not one I love, although if you love it you should go for it.

How about Rosalind?

Thanks 😊 I don't dislike Rosalind, but it does kind of remind me of Roz from 'Frasier' - not sure I can get past that!

I love Iona, Fern and Ariadne!

Sabrina is nice, but would she end up being Sab or maybe Rina for short? I'm not so keen on either or those.

Miles is nice, but I prefer Milo.

RomillyTheRabbit · 15/11/2020 10:38

Orson is lovely too.

Nell96 · 15/11/2020 10:44

I love Iona, Fern and Ariadne!

Love Iona too - worried it's too similar to Nia though, plus it's a bit of a mouthful. Fern (Cotton / Brittan?) - love Ariadne but not sure I'd have the guts to use it! Would sound very posh with our surname too.

Also not keen on nicknames for Sabrina - would very much discourage any shortening.

I love Sabrina! Such a beautiful name. Doesn't sound dated to me at all and I typically like more modern names. I really dislike Phoebe though. I don't mind Miles but don't love it either. My favourite out of your boy names is Finley!

I also love Iris, Lucy and Camilla. Smile

Nell96 · 15/11/2020 10:47

Thanks @cloverbug 😊

I like most of your names!

Miranda?

Hugo or Jasper? Miles is great though.

JanewaysBun · 15/11/2020 10:58

Sabrina is lovely. Reminds me of the witch and Audrey Hepburn which I think is good!
I know a sabine who is called sabby fyi

Daphne is my all time fave (and sadly vetoed) name so also like ariadne.

Another name I like similar to Sabrina is Audrina (shamelessly as in patridge)

Welsh name wise how about seren or angharad?

If you can't use Sylvie per se how about sylphide (as in the ballet la sylphide) and you could use sylphi as the nn.

Love jasper and If there is a ds2 he will be Magnus.

theotherfossilsister · 15/11/2020 11:22

How about Manon? Didn't post this earlier as I end up suggesting this name so often, but I love it. It's Welsh and French and in my opinion the prettiest name in the world.

JanewaysBun · 15/11/2020 11:23

Ooh lovely name. Not my taste but lovely

FluffyEggsontoast · 15/11/2020 11:30

Just wanted to say I love the name Miles - great choice and lovely it has meaning to your DH too

Ojj37 · 15/11/2020 11:31

I love Miles! Sabrina’s a lovely name, although just not my taste enough to use.

Thanks 😊 Not a fan of Hugo. I like Jasper but DH doesn't. Miranda is nice - I like Miri as a nn.

Magnus is an awesome name! I'd never have the guts to use it though. Daphne is fab too, but DH hates it and it would sound awful around here (NW England). I reckon I've gone through nearly every Welsh girl's name there is and I don't think any will work for us, sadly 😞 Glad you like Sabrina x

Darn

My DP is the same, but hoping he will come round if we ever have a daughter (at the moment we are talking about names like Lucy and Kate, not unusual at all, but pretty anyway.)

Yes, it would be so much easier without the other halves! Having said that, he has reigned in some of my more 'out there' suggestions... was pretty surprised when he suggested Sabrina.

I like Miles and Phoebe is lovely, but I think Sabrina is a bit of a 'stripper' name.

CaffiSaliMali · 15/11/2020 14:37

I love Sabrina. Not a fan of Miles, sorry. Magnus is fabulous and I know a baby Magnus so I don't think you have to be brave to use it.

I was going to suggest Osian as a boy's name/middle name but as you have a Nia I would avoid Osian.

How Welsh are you prepared to go middle name wise? I will suggest some which are very Welsh as I'm guessing pronunciation in England is less of an issue for a middle name!

Sabrina Angharad
Sabrina Eleri
Sabrina Carys
Sabrina Eirlys
Sabrina Esyllt
Sabrina Gwenllian
Sabrina Morwenna
Sabrina Mair
Sabrina Alys
Sabrina Mari
Sabrina Tesni
Sabrina Glesni
Sabrina Teleri
Sabrina Meleri
Sabrina Nerys

If you like Sabrina what about Juliet, Rosa, Lyra, Natasha, Louisa or Rosalie?

Some Welsh boys middle names to consider:

Tomos
Aled
Alun
Aneirin/Aneirin
Taliesin
Macsen
Harri
Rhodri
Ynyr
Iestyn
Ieuan
Ioan
Siôn
Siôr
