I confess I have an absolute loathing of those abbreviated names for boys which are very popular at the moment: Alfie, Ronnie, Reggie, Albie etc. But for some reason, I rather like Archie, and feel it doesn’t fall into the same category as those others. The thought of a grown man named Archie is perfectly pleasant. It’s probably because I’m a ghastly snob, and Archie sounds much more middle class. As PP said, there are plenty around, so there will be enough middle aged Archies around in forty years to seem perfectly normal.

FluffyEggsontoast · 15/11/2020 10:59

I love the name Archie (it's never been popular on Mumsnet but is very popular in real life), and if you look at the official statistics, the name Archie has actually declined in popularity since H&M chose it so now is an excellent time to use it @Wherethereshope

The official 2019stats showed it is about to leave the top 20 names. By the time the 2020 list is announced the name will be well outside the top 20 given the current downward trajectory

Great choice

cloverbug · 15/11/2020 11:01

Archie is lovely and I think it would be great for all ages.

BadEyeBri · 15/11/2020 11:06

Archie is a slightly fat, disobedient beagle

Chilldonaldchill · 15/11/2020 11:11

I know several Archies - the oldest is 17 and the youngest about 8. I see it as a very normal name with fits with the Alfies, Freddies, Charlies...
It will be totally normal as an adult for this generation as will be Milly, Maisy etc and all the other names people can't "imagine" on an adult.
It's not to my personal taste as I prefer longer more formal names but I don't think it will date badly and I think it's a perfectly fine normal name.
(The Archies I know have siblings Ruby X2, Jack, Bella, Amelia, Rose and Charlie).

JanewaysBun · 15/11/2020 11:26

It's a bit blah

Enderline · 15/11/2020 11:27

Thanks all.. gosh some of you are quite rude, I didn't ask if you liked it!

No one on this thread is being rude? They're just giving their opinions which, as another poster pointed out, you did ask for.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 15/11/2020 11:32

I always think that a 90 year old Archie is also more palatable than some of the names of the children at the schools around here 🙈

MimiDaisy11 · 15/11/2020 12:05

I think it works as an adult name and while it's popular it's not in the top 10 so it's likely you'll meet others but it's not Jack and Oliver popular.

On the rudeness. People on the internet are blunt and it's best to expect that when posting. Obviously in real life when you say you like a name you're unlikely to get people telling you it's horrible or a dog's name etc.

Thefaceofboe · 15/11/2020 12:12

IMO, Archie is awful and is very very popular. But if you like it, go for it.

Meepmeeep · 15/11/2020 12:16

I actually always associate the name with an older man - not a baby. I was quiet surprised when I saw it become quite popular.

TheChristmasPrincess · 15/11/2020 12:32

I perceive Archie as being a dog’s name.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 15/11/2020 12:35

I think it’s nice at any age, it is quite popular along with Alfie, I’m aware of a few aged around 13 to 20

AgeLikeWine · 15/11/2020 12:39

Archie is a great name, but everyone will inevitably assume you’re copying H&M, so it’s up to you if that’s how you want your choice of name to be viewed.

pilates · 15/11/2020 13:34

Not a fan but I like it for a dog’s name

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 15/11/2020 14:17

@AgeLikeWine thankfully my Archie came along long before H&M so they essentially copied me Grin

LadyEloise · 15/11/2020 15:00

People will think you copied Meghan and Harry.

FluffyEggsontoast · 15/11/2020 15:11

I really don't think anyone would think you copied M&H seen as it was a popular mainstream name wayyy before they chose it.
Not like Harper for example (which I like btw but it came from nowhere then boomed after Beckhams so is very different scenario. Archie was already top 20)
No one seems to say this as much about Charlotte George and Louis!

It's a lovely name OP- use it!

Wherethereshope · 15/11/2020 17:06

Thanks all.. my defensive reaction to anything a little negative makes me realise how much I like it!!

I like the perspective that he'll be in an age group of Charlie, Freddie, daisy etc I hadn't thought of that 😊

You did ask for opinions, OP.

Mine is that it's awful. The -ie ending makes it cutesy and I can't bear cutesy names on either boys or girls.

Wherethereshope · 15/11/2020 17:13

@DramaAlpaca I asked for opinions on whether it would age well / royal connection. It seems people can't help but throw in how much they hate it 😂

Poppyolive90 · 15/11/2020 17:15

Not my kind of thing at all. Not sure why but it’s just a bit tacky to me

Squiffany · 15/11/2020 17:17
@DramaAlpaca I asked for opinions on whether it would age well / royal connection. It seems people can't help but throw in how much they hate it 😂
Which is their opinion. Which is what you asked for.

MerchantOfVenom · 15/11/2020 17:23

You said you really liked the name, but opinions please.

People are giving them. IRL, people tell you what they think you want to hear. On here, you get (brutally) honest opinions.

HeronLanyon · 15/11/2020 17:24

If you don’t want opinions of a name don’t frame your enquiry ‘opinions please’ with additional questions about whether it is good for an adult and if it is too connected with H&M
In order -
I am not fond of it.
It’s not great in my opinion for an adult - bit cutesy a bit like Alfie.
Yes I think it may be connected in people’s minds with H&M.
