Initials Issue

Hello!

I’d love your advice re. my name choice.

I had a baby boy a week ago and we still haven’t settled on a name! Finally, we have one that we agree on (and it’s my granddad’s name so would be very meaningful for me). The annoying issue is it would leave our child with the initials BJ. I’ve only just realised!

Would this stop others using this name? Should we go back to the drawing board?

Thanks!

I wouldn't use it.

I delibrately spelt out my daughter's initials to check they didn't spell anything.

Congratulations on your little boy, could you add another name between the B and J?

Feelingthelobe · 13/11/2020 15:24

Yeah I wouldn’t sorry. We have had people apply for jobs where that has raised a smirk. You also have to think about company email addresses etc (or what ever we are using by the time they are working)

Could be worse though. True story. A guy applied for a job and his initials were B J Mycock

FippertyGibbett · 13/11/2020 15:25

I wouldn’t. A middle name wouldn’t help as it wouldn’t be used in school etc

LittleMissLockdown · 13/11/2020 15:26

In all honesty I wouldn't use it.

Wilma55 · 13/11/2020 15:26

Just like Boris!

MikeUniformMike · 13/11/2020 15:31

I wouldn't think anything of it.

Fern12 · 13/11/2020 15:31

I know I thought of Boris too!

Aggh looks like we will have to think of something else. I agree it doesn’t sit well with me, my sister says it would be fine but nobody wants to be that kid in the playground. Maybe I could use it as a middle name?

Definitely use it as a middle name especially as it has significance to you. I think your sister is trying to be kind but somewhere along the way be it in the playground, university, at work or just as a jibe from his mates he will probably thank you for not making it his first name.

BJ wouldn't bother me - as I'm from the MASH generation - one of the main characters was called BJ. That was his name, not just his initials.

There was a lovely story line where he said he was named after his Mum and his Dad and no one believed him. Turned out his Mum was called Bee and his Dad was called Jay.

Funny the things you remember. I'm going to go and have a quiet sit down now.........

Chilldonaldchill · 13/11/2020 17:38

My son is a teenager and does a sport with loads of teens and men (and a few women). One of them is called BJ. When I first heard it I was Shock but none of the others have ever mentioned it - and they are definitely not shy of being rude about all sorts of things to each other. I really wouldn't worry if it's first name and surname. I'd be more cautious if it's first and middle name.

OublietteBravo · 13/11/2020 17:41

It’s fine. DH’s initials are BJ and it’s a complete non-issue. He’s never been bothered by it.

rainbow40 · 13/11/2020 19:16

Boris initial aren’t BJ they are actually ABJ his real name is Alexander with Boris as his middle

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 13/11/2020 19:23

Boris is Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson

nitsandwormsdodger · 13/11/2020 19:29

Who uses initials? I've never used mine? When would this be an issue ? also kids don't call them bj's any more there are other slang terms

I'd hardly notice nor give a monkeys if I saw this in professional context

Waitingforamate · 13/11/2020 22:02

I know plenty of people with initials BJ and have never thought anything of it. Really surprised that lots of adults think this is an issue.

MindyStClaire · 14/11/2020 07:42

I wouldn't use it - I had a job where we signed our initials on every piece of work, and some people were informally known by their initials. BJ definitely would've been commented on.

MimiDaisy11 · 14/11/2020 09:13

I don't see an issue. It's rarely going to come up and if it does it might get a little laugh but maybe not. Also with initialling things or email addresses, I really don't see adults making more than a joking comment if they're friends and in most professional environments you're going to come across as really immature if you mention it, especially if you repeatedly mention it.

MimiDaisy11 · 14/11/2020 09:14

Also meant to add that if it bothers you then a middle name could change it and the middle name could be brought in for email addresses and initialling things.

Cbeebiesrehab · 14/11/2020 10:11

Someone might make a joke about it once and then get on with their day. It’s really not something that will hinder him. If children want to pick on someone they will find a reason, regardless of initials. Stick a middle name in there and if asked to initial things use all three.

TheNanny23 · 14/11/2020 12:18

I think adding a middle name is fine.

BAJ just doesn’t have the same connotion.
I do remember as a kid having to initial stuff quite a bit as I have quite pleasing initials. That has sloped off into adulthood however and hardly use them now.

IrishCawfee · 14/11/2020 12:59

I know an adult male with the initials BJ. He's in his 60's and got stuck with the nn BJ at school and that's how people still refer to him.

LaBodDelMed · 14/11/2020 13:08

I wouldn’t go for the initials BJ.
Can you put another name between them as someone upthread said.

gettingolderbutcooler · 14/11/2020 14:20

I don't think anyone uses my kids middle initials. Does anyone nowadays?
I think go ahead.
Brian James smith for example.
He's never be known as that. He'd only be Brian smith. And later if he ever needed to use his middle initial it would only be for official forms.
