Boys name help needed

Help! I’m days away from giving birth and we have no idea what to call our little boy. The name has to work in both Germany and the UK and we also have French family so it would be a bonus if it sounded ok to French ears too. We don’t mind slight difference in pronunciation but would prefer it not to become a totally different name in the other country. So that rules out J names. There are lots of boys in our families already so many names we like but can’t use. For example Benjamin, Sebastian, Lukas, Felix, Max. Our last name is short, one syllable.

I know a Thomas with German family.

SocialBees · 13/11/2020 15:31

The German / British couple I know have sons called Timmy and Oli.

Not much help but the German/English couples I know have a Tobias and a Jonah. Jonah effectively has two names J or Y sound.
Tobias is Tob-ee-as.

Matthias (Mat-ee-as) is nice.

Dramacoats · 13/11/2020 16:15

I like Matthias but worry English speakers will pronounce it at Math-eye-as which I’m not so keen on.
I like Otto but it’s a bit of an old man’s name in Germany. All the ones I know are 60+.

In answer to OP's last post, I worked with a Matthias and he was Mat-ee-as to all but 1 of the staff, who called him Math-eye-as.

Names like Frank and Peter should work. Peter not so good in France.

Andrew works for all 3

Alexander is pretty international (maybe Leo too?). I think many biblical names also work in most countries - Samuel, Adam, Gabriel etc

DepuisToujours · 13/11/2020 20:52

Was coming on to suggest Felix or Alexander, but see you can't have Felix and Alexander has already been suggested.

Would Henry work? Or William? Richard?

Wolfgang and wolf or wolf for short

I really like Gabriel, Alexander and Leo. Nephew’s middle name is Alexander so not sure if that rules it out. DH not massively keen on Gabriel but maybe he is persuadable. He likes Matthias and has also suggested Matteo as an alternative.

Gabriel is lovely. Leo and Alexander are nice too, but are more popular I think. In the UK at least.

It's absolutely fine to use your nephew's middle name as a first name. No reasonable person would object to that Smile.

I wouldn't even mind someone in my family using my dcs' first name, but then, I rarely see extended family, so it's not so much of an issue.

I'm also still not over my DH vetoing names which I loved but which were in our distant family. So things like the name of my cousin's daughter who lives in another country and who my children have met once. Oh one of my children actually hasn't met her at all come to think of it! And his sister's nieces and nephews...so not even related to us Hmm. I think if we were naming our dcs now, he wouldn't veto these, as he has realised how little we actually see extended family!
