I'm struggling with boys names, these are my top of the list but partner is not agreeing, he's given one name which I can't stand.

Xavier
Hugo
Theodore

I'm not English nor is father, so not sure if these names have a wider general feeling/connotation in England. What do you ladies think ? Thank you 🙏

Love Xavier and Hugo. Xavier can be pronounced a few ways so you might have to correct people (but I don't think that's a problem), and Hugo might be seem as a bit posh, but again that wouldn't worry me.

I find Theodore so dull. Every other baby boy I know seems to be called Theo or Teddy.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/11/2020 21:03

Xavier is gorgeous. Only issue is pronunciation in the UK - most will say "Zah - vee -er" or "Zay - vee -er", but you will occasionally hear "Ex- zay -vee -er" (X men) or the Spanish "Hah -vee- er". Hugo and Theodore are currently a bit trendy here though, unfortunately. Hugh or Edward (if you want the " Ted/Teddy" nn are nice.

Ah I had t thought about pronunciation of Xavier. I would pronounce Zay-veee-air

Hugo is lovely and I don't know any young Hugos, it's not overly popular.

Xavier may have pronunciation issues, but is nice. Theo is very common and dull.

name1name2 · 11/11/2020 21:52

And I had no idea Theodore could be shortened to Teddy. I'll cross that name off

They are all nice.

I agree that Theodore / Theo / Teddy is mega popular at the moment, which might be off putting. But I do like the name.

How about;

Oliver
Max
Sebastian
Toby
Isaac
Felix
Roman
Raphael
Gabriel
Rowan
Benjamin
Constantine
Benedict?

Macblondie · 11/11/2020 22:31

I love the name Hugo!

MercyBodle · 13/11/2020 09:30

I love all 3 names. Hugo is my favourite. I don't have any negative connotations with any of them.

name1name2 · 13/11/2020 16:13

Thanks for all you comments. In my head it's between Hugo and Xavier. Just that Xavier may spend his life correcting people on how to say it !!

Hugo or Theo.

TheDetectiveBadge · 13/11/2020 16:17

I love the name Xavier but agree that pronunciation may be an issue.

Whatsyourflava · 14/11/2020 08:54

Hugo is lovely @name1name2

How about Arlo, Milo or just Hugh

DepuisToujours · 14/11/2020 08:57

I think Xavier is normally pronounced how the op wants it in the uk... but I guess some people might ex-ayvier him occasionally! Like professor X in X men.

Hugo would have fewer pronunciation issues, but I wouldn't discount Xavier over that. I do prefer Hugo though, but that's just personal taste.

TenThousandSpoons · 14/11/2020 09:05

Theodore is my favourite. I would say Theo is the obvious nickname and nobody would call him Ted/Teddy unless you did. (I like Ted btw but sounds like you don’t!)

Xavier and Hugo are both very posh and Xavier has the pronunciation issues but they’re both nice too.

The person saying Hugo is very common/popular then suggesting Oliver made me laugh - isn’t Oliver the most popular boys’ name in the UK? It was number 1 in the baby names list whenever I’ve looked in recent years anyway.

TenThousandSpoons · 14/11/2020 09:06

Sorry it was Theo being mega popular not Hugo.

Chilldonaldchill · 14/11/2020 09:11

I love both Xavier and Hugo.
I've probably met about 5 Xaviers (my ds has been at school with 3) - two pronounced it Zay-vee-er and 3 Zav-ee- air. We learned quickly which was which and when he was younger my ds assumed they were just different names. I don't think the mispronunciations will follow him all his life but possibly when he meets someone new he might need to reinforce his pronunciation.
Good luck. They're both gorgeous names.

maureenfrombarnsley · 14/11/2020 09:12

My opinion:

Love Hugo, my fave on your list. Not common here but still 'normal'

Theo lovely but seems popular. Then again, I don't actually know loads of young Theos!

Don't like Xavier at all. If anything I think that's the one that will sound more 'trendy'

Mousepad20 · 14/11/2020 09:30

I'd rule out Xavier for pronunciation.
I'd rule out Theodore for popularity,
Hugo is easy to say, a recognisable (poshish) name and I don't know any. :-)
