Girls and boys

I have one DC already, who has an unusual name (similar feel to Hugo, but much less popular). It's pretty outing so I don't want to write it, and would appreciate it if you didn't either if you guess it!

Anyway, I am looking for something that will distinguish a child from others (so definitely outside the top 100), sounds stylish and could be a bit international.

girls:
Tess(a?)
Flora
Beatrix (combined with Beatrice I wonder if this may be a bit too popular)
Clementine (too popular? Not sure about Clem as a nn)
Hermione (love Minnie as a nn, though I know some people object to the genital link - I had never heard of it, so not sure how widespread that is)
Ophelia
Greta
Liesel

boys:
Thibault
Caspar
August(us)
Basil (hate Baz as a shortening, which feels a little inevitable...)
Felix (too popular I think)

Any feedback or ideas of names I may not have considered would be great.

Thanks!

Clementine Greta and Caspar get my vote
None are overused

FluffyEggsontoast · 10/11/2020 22:00

I also like Ophelia

DramaAlpaca · 10/11/2020 22:37

Flora, Greta and Caspar or Felix I think sound best with what I've guessed your son's name to be Wink

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/11/2020 22:38

Tess(a?) - Either Tess or Tessa is beautiful. Think I like the simplicity
of Tess slightly more (could have Teresa nn Tess?)
Flora - Very pretty, slightly sweet old-fashioned feel.
Beatrix - Prefer Beatrice, I find the X a little harsh but it's nice enough.
Clementine - fine but nn Clem is horrible.
Hermione - Interesting, but not my fave and maybe currently still too Harry Potter linked.
Ophelia - Gorgeous, so feminine and elegant - wish I could use it!
Greta - Nice, but perhaps a bit nicknamey?
Liesel - Sound of Music (and prefer sound of Lisbeth or Lisette for Elisabeth nn's)

boys:
Thibault - okay if French heritage, otherwise a bit much.
Caspar - Lovely, but could have spelling issues.
August(us) - guilty pleasure (so despite my love of Roman names, the simpler August would be likely be easier to live with).
Basil - too dated.
Felix - Nice, but agree is really rising in popularity (though at the moment it's still outside top 50)

Could consider Rufus, Lucian, Cecilia or Claudia?

MercyBodle · 10/11/2020 23:08

I love most of your names.
Girls - favourites are: Tess, Flora, Beatrix, Clementine, Greta. I don't think any of them are too popular. Hard to pick one!
Boys - I love all except Basil. Is Felix in top 100? I have only ever come across one. August and Caspar probably my favourites.

girls:
Tess(a?) - love both and I think it fits your criteria well
Flora - really like but probably more mainstream
Beatrix (combined with Beatrice I wonder if this may be a bit too popular) - I think it's "normal but not common" and I think it's beautiful
Clementine (too popular? Not sure about Clem as a nn) - I think this is fast rising in popularity
Hermione (love Minnie as a nn, though I know some people object to the genital link - I had never heard of it, so not sure how widespread that is) - I think this might be too popular. Everyone in my area (I work in healthcare) calls their genitalia a "minnie"
Ophelia - can't get past "I feel ya". Also I think it feels a bit try hard
Greta - I think this will be another name that massively increases in popularity
Liesel - don't like at all. It's just Sound of Music to me

boys:
Thibault - Romeo and Juliet. It's ok
Caspar - love this
August(us) - love this
Basil (hate Baz as a shortening, which feels a little inevitable...) - I think so many people will just shout Bas-iiiil like in Fawlty Towers. Children still watch that
Felix (too popular I think) - certainly popular. Nice but a bit vanilla now for what you want I think

Of your lists I would choose Tessa or Beatrix and Caspar or Augustus.

How about:
Miranda
Cordelia
Camilla
Cecilia
Cecily
Dorothea
Tabitha
Rowena
Hester
Harriet

Benedict
Rufus
Claudio/us
Solomon
Julian/Julius
Jonas
Rupert
Barnaby

Fivemoreminutes1 · 11/11/2020 05:18

I love Beatrix, Clementine and Flora.

How about:
Fleur
Clemency
Lara
Genevieve
Ottilie
Viola
Colette
Delphine
Cassia
Aurelia
Madeleine
Anais
Adelaide
Juliette

For boys, how about:
Perseus (nn Percy)
Fabian
Nathaniel
Lysander
Rocco
Barnabas

EbbaDay · 11/11/2020 08:26

What an exciting shortlist! Hermione and August/us would be my top picks. Probably August over Augustus. Minnie and Gus are great nickname options Grin

DepuisToujours · 11/11/2020 08:53

I love Tess! It's elegant and not common, but still not ostentatious or flowery.

I also love August and suggested it for DS, but DH laughed his leg off Hmm. Felix is nice. Fairly popular, but only in certain age groups. Might date though, I suppose.

I like Benedict, suggested^^.

I also love Barnaby, not Barnabas so much.

How about?:

Miriam
Juliet
Genevieve

Constantine
Emil
Gabriel

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/11/2020 08:54

Love Tess and Flora

SocialBees · 11/11/2020 09:01

My favourites are Tess / Tessa, Clementine, Caspar and Felix.

Least favourites are Liesel and Thibault.

IrishCawfee · 11/11/2020 12:53

Tessa, Beatrix and Caspar only.

IrishCawfee · 11/11/2020 12:53

Oh didn't notice Felix that too but it does make me think of cat food

SonicandTails · 11/11/2020 20:28

Wow, you guys are good! Some lovely suggestions here! I love Rufus, Rupert and Barnaby. I also really like Lucian, but really dislike Luke as a nn, and I like Emile, but can't imagine any nicknames I like.. I really like Fabian. What nicknames you think that might attract?

For girls I like Cordelia, Cecilia, Dorothea (esp. Dottie), but not sure I love them. I really like Hester, but it doesn't really work internationally I think, and although I love Anais and Genevieve I would be concerned about the British butchering pronunciation of them!

There are a few that we like but couldn't use because of family/friends. These include Clara, Juliet(te - though not sure I love that one) and Claudia

Please do keep any suggestions coming! We struggled so much with naming DC that we are keen to avoid that again by being a bit more prepared!

Thank you Smile
