I believe Vivian is the 'original' spelling?

Vivian for a boy, Vivien (or Vivienne) for a girl.

DotBall · 09/11/2020 15:53

Vivian was originally a male name and became a female name, a bit like Hilary or Leslie. Either spelling is acceptable nowadays.

Thank, I was just reading.

Vivien is apparently the french masc version but feminine in English speaking countries.

Interesting.

I find Vivienne a bit too much but love the name.

I'd say Vivian for a boy, Vivien for a girl. I think it's beautiful and love Vivi for short.
I agree that Vivienne is a but much, a bit like having 'Isabelle' when 'Isobel' does the same job.

I love names with a V sound. Always loved the girl in my class's name -Verity

Vivien

PurBal · 09/11/2020 16:41

Vivienne

CharitySchmarity · 09/11/2020 17:02

Vivien for a girl. Vivian to me is male and very dated.

Tibtab · 09/11/2020 17:03

I prefer the Vivienne spelling, agree that Vivian is a boys name

souproll · 09/11/2020 17:06

Vivien or Vivienne for a girl.

calimommy · 09/11/2020 18:43

Vivienne is a nicer spelling imo, it's also on my list ☺️

Vivian for a boy just makes me think of the Young Ones. I knew a Vivien at school who was a girl.

NameChange84 · 09/11/2020 18:49

I definitely prefer Vivienne. It looks less dated. I also prefer Isabelle to Isobel, relating the first to classy French women in their 30s and the latter to all my Scottish friends grannies!

Probably the most famous female Vivien in the English speaking world was actress Vivien Leigh (although she was born Vivian!), so I would use the Vivien spelling for a girl in the UK. Nice name (love nn Vivi), think it will make a comeback.
