I should say that Boudicca was inspired somewhat by a small child singing the Horrible Histories song while brandishing a Coco pops box sword. Said small child offers "Beauticia" as an alternative name/ spelling for your consideration.

I researched the history of our last house, and in the 1901 census there was a housemaid called Boadicea registered as living there. I thought what a marvellous name. I used to wander into the back bedroom, that would presumably have been hers, and think about her looking out of the window at the garden, all those years ago.

Boudicca was a great name for Boudicca but I don't think its a classic or a very good name for a child of today. You have to imagine if you yourself were called Boudicca and how that might feel (at school, answering the phone, applying for jobs etc)

I've asked our resident Welsh speaker and he says Budug is pronounced Biddig. So basically Biddy. That's a bit of a come-down.

That’s so brilliant, @VenusClapTrap. Like something from a book. Wonder what became of her?

AlwaysLatte · 09/11/2020 18:47

Aaargh, no, and God no, in that order.

AlwaysLatte · 09/11/2020 18:49

Good idea of Jessica but Jekka for short. I'd go for that!

My thoughts?

Fuck no!

I like names like Juno, Hestia, Martha etc. But those are too scary/witchy for my taste and a hell of a lot to saddle a child with.

What if she’s a meek as a mouse, introverted Boudicca? Or an angelic little Hecate?

Have to admit I have a soft spot for Cleopatra/Cleo...

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/11/2020 18:59

Like previous poster I've only heard Jekka (or Jecca) as a nn for Jessica, which is fine.

Boudicca and Hecate aren't really useable as first names, because of the "dic" and witch links respectively (could be fun "out there" middle names though if you really love them).

Love the suggestions of using a first name with "strong" links or imagery instead like Matilda, Valeria, Athena, Artemis, Emmeline etc.

Wasn't there an MN poster called Hecate in the past?

Yes, there was. She was renowned for talking a lot of sense, if it’s the one I’m thinking of.

So interesting! Having a name for the maid almost gives her a personality, and it is a lovely name, I would want to know more about her. Maybe you could find out through parish records if she ever married. There can't have been many domestic servants called Boadicea

I know a child named Boudicca! Her siblings have unusual names too.

Yes, that's the one, I wonder if she's still around.

I love Boudicca. You could shorten it a range of ways.
