JaJaDingDong · 08/11/2020 21:54

Well they all make me think of someone Scottish!

LubaLuca · 08/11/2020 21:54

Those names make me think of capable, outdoorsy types, perhaps with the exception of Lachlan and Logan which seem a bit less masculine to me for some reason I can't explain.

mintich · 08/11/2020 22:05

@JaJaDingDong hehe spot on! Although I have lived in England for years now!

They're all very rugged except Gregor. Gregor makes me think of monks singing.

Savourysenorita · 08/11/2020 22:22

@mintich

Fergus Lachlan Gregor Alistair Logan Duncan

I have done a post like this before but I have changed a lot of the names on the list!

Surname begins with H so dont want any 'H' names

Fergus - geeky, ginger lachlan - chav. Rough Gregor- fat banker with crumbs down his neck. Alistair - ponce. Logan - see 'lachlan'. Duncan - posh Dr who's parents should have really known better and called him 'Sebastian'
Whatthebloodyell · 08/11/2020 22:24

Definitely Scottish and proud! I like them all other than Gregor. I also like Angus and Hamish. I don’t see a problem with double H.

Fergus - shortened to Fergie or Gus (makes me Think of guff)
Lachlan - shortened to Lachy, will become lucky.
Gregor - Greg. A middle aged man.
Alistair - Ali
Logan - Logie Bogey
Duncan- Dunc

Savourysenorita · 08/11/2020 22:24

Oh sshhhhit. Sorry I thought this was one of those piss takey threads. Oh dear. Sorry I didn't realise they were a serious name choice list. ConfusedBlush

Aparttogether · 08/11/2020 22:24

Scottish, manly, not keen on any but Alistair is best.

glasshalfsomething · 08/11/2020 22:24

Callum
Craig

Savourysenorita · 08/11/2020 22:27

Ps just to add insult to injury I'm afraid... 'lachlan' just reminds me of 'lochia' the post birth bleeding and I just get an image of a stinky festering maternity pad in my head everytine I say it Blush

mintich · 08/11/2020 22:28

@Savourysenorita don't worry, I realised you hadn't quite got it!

Savourysenorita · 08/11/2020 22:30

Sorry @mintich I love a good traditional Scottish name. Angus is a lovely strong name

mintich · 08/11/2020 22:32

I did like Angus...until my cousin named her dog Angus!

Initial thought is Scotland. For the names specifically:

Fergus - baby in Shrek
Lachlan - southern hemisphere Aussie soaps, even though 100% Scottish name to me.
Gregor - I know this sounds ridiculous but it's very adult to me not very baby/childish
Alistair - like it a lot
Logan - not keen
Duncan - Bannatyne & Shakespearean character

Cameron, Fraser, Drew, Hamish are my other suggestions

jackstini · 08/11/2020 22:36

Fergus - the bogeyman (I know it's fungus but still reminds me)
Lachlan - can't hear this now without thinking of that bloody fortnite YouTuber
Gregor - sounds medieval battle-y or a monk
Alistair - old man
Logan - love this
Duncan - Bannatyne or donuts

Callum
Drew
Fraser
Alexander
Eoin
Niall
Kier (might depend on your politics but love the name!)
Macauley

CaptainCorellisPangolin · 08/11/2020 22:38

Fergus- The calibre of public schoolboy who will remind you that he's really very down to earth as his great great great great great great great grandfather was a miner. Or met a miner, can't remember.

Lachlan- Nice. Suits any sort of person, really.

Gregor- Keep thinking of Nadya's lover from What We do in the Shadows. Gregory is better, IMO.

Alistair- Had an absolutely brilliant English teacher called Alistair so am quite attached to it. Can be thought of as quite a posh name in England but all the posh Alistair's I've met have been nice, quiet gentle types.

Logan- Trendy, beardy man.

Duncan- Have had two absolutely clueless managers called Duncan. Both public school. Always got the impression that they were probably the less bright (to be polite) son of the family, who got found a middle management position he was completely unqualified for, in the hope that he'd do less damage there than in politics.

Obviously, these are just my experiences of the names (I assume they probably have better connotations in Scotland) so apologies to any Duncans or Ferguses.

throwaway10000 · 08/11/2020 22:38

Dunno why but they remind me of Australians or New Zealanders

mintich · 08/11/2020 22:44

@AliceMcK I mean, that literally looks like my family 😁

mintich · 08/11/2020 23:06

@jackstini is this youtuber really popular? As my kids are young, I've no idea, but wouldn't want everyone thinking I'd named my child after him!

I’m Scottish too and all the Lachlans I know are ‘Lachie’.

Which fine if you can say ch properly, but could sound like lackey, if not...

Of your list, I like Alistair best.

jackstini · 09/11/2020 07:38

@mintich - he’s massive, 14 million followers and so important to Fortnite they just introduced a limited edition ‘skin’ (these are kind of characters/costumes you buy or your player?)
DS 11 would watch him all day if his phone didn’t have a 1 hour limit!

Pipapple · 09/11/2020 07:39

Alastair is my favourite, I also really like Campbell, Maxwell, Finley and Callum.

BikeRunSki · 09/11/2020 07:41

They make me think of an Iain Banks novel!
I do love Scottish names though, and agree with “outdoorsy and capable”.

Spudlet · 09/11/2020 07:47

I really like Duncan, actually. No particular reason, but it’s just a name I really enjoy saying! Grin I just think it’s got a nice, round sort of sound to it.

On the subject of dogs called Angus - I used to know the most wonderful Old English Mastiff called Angus. He was an older dog by the time I knew him, and the absolute epitome of ‘gentle giant’ - I’ve genuinely known smaller equines than him. He was gorgeous.
