@MikeUniformMike
I always love it when you pop up on these threads 👏🏼

Tempjob · 07/11/2020 22:05

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. We do live in Wales but not a Welsh speaking area. I don't speak Welsh myself and some of these ideas were picked up online or from a baby names book. I realise some of thes spellings may be wrong...

Girl: Elora
Boy: Emlyn

Ikeameatballs · 07/11/2020 22:26

I like Elora but I can see from PP that it’s a controversial choice!

For boys I like Cedwyn.

DramaAlpaca · 08/11/2020 02:56

@MikeUniformMike I don't have a clue about Welsh names but you do make me laugh Grin

Sorry, OP but I can't help much. I like Nerys though, I'm familiar with that one. Mabli has quite a nice sound to it, too.

MercyBodle · 08/11/2020 05:53

My favourites are Mabli, Tesni, Elora and
Cedwyn.

MikeUniformMike · 08/11/2020 14:40

@Tempjob, it's not just the spellings. You may have some there that might be misspelt or mistyped.

I don't know what Cerilys is supposed to be - Cerys, Eirlys ? Ceri+eirlys? Pronunciation-wise f it was welsh, it would be Kerr-ILLis, but as it doesn't look welsh I'd probably try it as Serrilis. Bin it.

Elora is of Hebrew origin, and not really welsh.
Enida looks like Enid with an a on the end. Enid (ENN-id) is so nice, why spoil it.

Marlyn might be Mairlyn (Mair+Lyn?). AFAIK not really a welsh name.

Malwyn - oh dear... Malwen is snail.
Morwyn - this would be calling your baby boy Housemaid.

forgetthehousework · 08/11/2020 14:41

@Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor, as long as they never have to speak to anyone who's not in Wales I guess.

yellowmaoampinball · 08/11/2020 14:45

I actually wondered whether the op was deliberately trolling M-U-M then. Which would be a super fun idea for a thread.

MikeUniformMike · 08/11/2020 15:03

That was my thought too.

Why should Welsh people not use Welsh names for their children? In case they have to speak to an English person? Any other nationalities you extend this to?

forgetthehousework · 08/11/2020 16:53

@Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor as far as I'm concerned anyone can call their child whatever they like, was just pointing out that they will be endlessly telling people how to spell their name for the rest of their lives. And sometimes it gets tedious ...

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 08/11/2020 16:56

@thedancingbear

I would go for Enlli just to enjoy English people trying to pronounce it

Cerwyn and Ebrill are both lovely imo.

If we’re doing classic welsh names, my favourites are aneurin/Nye/Nai and Meyric.

Oh no need to just pick that one! This English person could mangle all of them, sadly.
MikeUniformMike · 08/11/2020 17:02

@forgetthehousework, people should use a name they love for their child but they need to bear in mind that it will be the child's name and not theirs.

Generally, I disapprove of names used outside their culture/language, and for more than one reason.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 08/11/2020 17:02

How would one correctly pronounce Mabli?

I'm guessing not the way I am. 🤣

MikeUniformMike · 08/11/2020 17:05

@thedancingbear, Nye isn't really welsh but a nn for a welsh name.
Meyric is an anglicised form of Meurig.

Naming a child something to 'enjoy English people trying to pronounce it' is sick.

forgetthehousework · 09/11/2020 13:28

It's not a bad idea to also consider if the initial letters spell anything.

MikeUniformMike · 09/11/2020 13:52

Mabli is like Madly but b instead of d.
Mab-ly

Floralnomad · 09/11/2020 13:59

I like Mabli and Emlyn from the original list , but actually prefer the names @MikeUniformMike has suggested .

forgetthehousework · 09/11/2020 17:11

Well I suppose if the child hates their name there's always deedpoll Grin

MikeUniformMike · 09/11/2020 17:57

You only have to live with it for 16 years.

Firebird83 · 09/11/2020 21:34

I like Tesni, Mabli and Emlyn.

CaffiSaliMali · 10/11/2020 13:56

Mabli, Tesni and Glesni for girls and Emlyn for a boy on the grounds they are real names.

As others have said baby name sites and books can be dodgy when it comes to Welsh names. Often they list random words like arthaith (torture/torment) and olwyn (wheel) as baby names.

Some suggestions:

Mari (marry - one of several Welsh versions of Mary)
Mali (mally - welsh for Molly)
Nansi (Nancy)
Elin (elle-in)
Megan
Cadi (caddy)
Catrin (Welsh for Catherine)
Alys (Welsh for Alice)
Nia (NEE-ah, Welsh for Niamh)

Tomos (TO-moss - both Os are pronounced like the o on moss - Welsh for Thomas)
Harri
Jac
Osian (OSH-ann - just don't pair with a daughter called Nia as Osian and Nia were lovers in mythology)
Macsen (MAX-en with the en like the en in hen, Macsen Wledig is what the Welsh call Magnus Maximus)
Ioan (YO-ann)
Emrys (EM-riss - Welsh for ambrose)
