Welsh names that are easy to say

SaliMaliydwi · 07/11/2020 15:24

We live and work in Wales but DS/DD wouldn't be going to a Welsh speaking school and we don't live in a primarily welsh speaking area.

We like the idea of using a welsh name but would like one that is easily understood if they were to grow up and want to work elsewhere. I know people will learn to say a name but I can't bear it when I hear Sky sports talk about Geraint Thomas 😂

So we are looking for names that would be suitable really. We like Anwen and Macsen but need some more suggestions please?

My daughter is a Ffion. My family are Welsh and but husband’s are English, and we have had no trouble with incorrect pronunciation with them once we explain the Welsh alphabet. We live in Scotland now and no one has got it wrong yet here either.

@Starlightstarbright1

My son 8s a Dylan.
And I’d bet a significant amount that it’s usually pronounced wrongly.

(It’s Dul-ann not Dil-ann)

MikeUniformMike · 07/11/2020 15:46

It's not just Sky Sports.

Gavin (Gawain), Evan (Ifan) and Erin aren't really welsh, but all are usable.
Tegan is dodgy as it means Toy.

Unless you go for something that is pronounced exactly as it looks in both languages, you'll probably get someone mispronouncing or misspelling.

Pick a name you love and ask on here (see current thread on Efa)

I've got a Cerys and a Bronwen and we live in England. Both have variations on their names! English people can't seem to understand wen is pronounced wen not win.

MyView2 · 07/11/2020 16:20

Good suggestions so far. What about Seren?

TwigTheWonderKid · 07/11/2020 16:22

I know boys called Elis and Taran

doctorhamster · 07/11/2020 16:22

Unfortunately I'm yet to meet an English person that can pronounce Welsh names correctly. Even the ones that should theoretically be easy seemingly aren't.

Love Seren Seren Efa is gorgeous
MikeUniformMike · 07/11/2020 16:31

I'd go for a language-neutral name like Philip or Ann, and use something more welsh as a middle name.

Not keen on Anwen (so dated) and Macsen is a bit too trendy.

Something like Annest should be OK for a girl - it's very pretty.
Huw for a boy?

WellTidy · 07/11/2020 16:36

My first choice for a girl would be Catrin, and, for a boy, Gethin.

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 07/11/2020 16:43

On our list we had

Nye
Evan
Cai
Deri
Mabli
Manon
Eira- not easy for non welsh speakers to say or spell but I love it anyway!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 07/11/2020 16:44

Griff and Gwen
