We are Welsh and live in Wales if that swings anyone.

Love it

Beamur · 06/11/2020 18:06

How do you say it?

omg35 · 06/11/2020 18:06

I like it but she will be called Eva the English pronounciarion so you need to be ok with that too

HighQueenOfFarts · 06/11/2020 18:07

Never heard of it before. Looks cool.
Does it sound like airva because that would be too similar to Eva for me.
Or does it sound more like E for effort?

PoppingCandies · 06/11/2020 18:07

@Beamur

How do you say it?
Ee-fah

Reminds me of heifer - female cow. Am in England though so might be a more common Welsh name?

yarrow89 · 06/11/2020 18:08

I have an Irish friend called Aoife and it's pronounced the same (I assume you're pronouncing it eeefa not effa). She gets annoyed that no one in the UK can pronounce it from the Irish spelling so Efa would be much easier! I like the name, also I really like Effie which could be a potential nickname.

SleepyRoo · 06/11/2020 18:09

It looks like you meant to call her Aoife

SeanCailleach · 06/11/2020 18:10

Is it written in Welsh? I would have read it like Eh-va.

PoppingCandies · 06/11/2020 18:12

@SeanCailleach that's the other problem. I would also pronounce it that way. It's DHs Aunt's name and she pronounced it Eee-pha so that is what he wants.

BluebellsGreenbells · 06/11/2020 18:13

I agree it’s Aoife - it’s an Irish name

PoppingCandies · 06/11/2020 18:14

Efa is a Welsh name.

Hmmm not looking good is it? Too many disagreements over how you pronounce it already.

PotteringAlong · 06/11/2020 18:17

I agree that Efa is welsh name and I love it but I think you’re pronouncing it wrongly like that and I would also pronounce it Eh-va.

I think you’re setting her up for a lifetime of annoyance and you either go for Aoife if that’s how you want to pronounce it or Efa pronounced Eh-va

Beamur · 06/11/2020 18:17

I like it. It's also easier for us English to understand than Aoife (which is also lovely).
It's similar to Eva but it's a great variation

PoppingCandies · 06/11/2020 18:18

True. Sigh. But I think you would get that with a lot of Welsh girl names.

I know a Welsh Efa and she pronounces it Eva.

CaptivatingGonads · 06/11/2020 18:18

It's ok but too Aofie and Eva.

Hows about:
-Cerys
-Eira
-Catrin
-Alaw

PoppingCandies · 06/11/2020 18:20

DH wants it to be pronounced how his aunt pronounced her name. It has great sentimental value for him. But maybe we should leave it alone and go back to the drawing board.

I also like Cadi

It hardly matters that you might have to explain to some people how to pronounce it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/11/2020 18:21

Efa would be pronounced EH-va, so if you want Eefah it might be better to go for Aoife.

PoppingCandies · 06/11/2020 18:22

It would get annoying everyone thinking you just didn't know how to pronounce it correctly though I think.

Efa is a Welsh name. You are Welsh and living in Wales. Your husband wants the name to honour his aunt. What a random bunch of people on a forum thinks shouldn't matter a bit.

SpamIAm · 06/11/2020 18:25

Hmm...I was going to say I like it initially, but your DH's aunt pronounces it incorrectly 🤷‍♀️ I wouldn't be giving a Welsh name and then essentially making up the pronunciation, just looks like you don't know how it's supposed to be pronounced.

PoppingCandies · 06/11/2020 18:26

This is true but in Wales by Welsh speakers it would be pronounced differently to how DH wants the name pronounced because of his Aunt. It is a made up pronunciation I think.
