What do you think of this name? I am a big literacy fan so prefer this spelling after a certain writer

He will get it spelled Austin so would go with that
Austin is a nice name

Kanaloa · 31/10/2020 21:32

I have met an Austin before and would probably spell it like that. It’s not my taste but it’s an okay name.

danascully96 · 31/10/2020 21:36

Hmm, for a girl I'm assuming? I don't like it actually, I'm afraid. I did know a girl named Austin in high school and don't remember finding her name unappealing or anything, but just not my style. I think "Austen" would be too confusing for spelling purposes.

Let's see, Jane Austen-type names:

Elizabeth
Catherine
Laura
Emma
Marianne
Clara
Charlotte
Caroline
Julia
Eleanor (spelled Elinor in the book, but I prefer Eleanor personally)

Hope this helps!

The Austin spelling is nicer for a first name. I quite like it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 31/10/2020 22:54

I assume for a boy, since Austin is pretty popular for boys now? The Austen spelling feels quite feminine to me (precisely because of Jane Austen!), even though very few girls seem to have been called it as a first name. Depends whether this would bother you or not? I don't often like "surname" names but Austen has a nice sound.

Folicky · 31/10/2020 23:08

I think it's a bit undergraduate-y

Oneandabean · 01/11/2020 00:47

I’ve only heard it for a boy and only in American movies, but if that doesn’t bother you I don’t think it’s bad although I’d go with Austin

TildaTurnip · 01/11/2020 00:49

For a girl? I am not keen on surnames for first names mostly and so dislike Austin too (though would assume boy with this spelling).

Readandwalk · 01/11/2020 00:52

It's a lovely sounding name for either sex.

danascully96 · 01/11/2020 06:24

Can confirm that Austin is a boys' name over here in the US, but Austin on a girl would just suggest that she is either 1) a tomboy or 2) Southern. Either way, not bad associations and I think of a confident girl who can hang with the boys :) It's not unattractive at all and is perfectly suitable imo. She may wish to have a more decidedly feminine name, so you are taking that risk. Fun fact: the former (female) dean of Harvard goes by Drew.

VenusClapTrap · 01/11/2020 06:51

Powers.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 01/11/2020 08:32

I like it!

Mousepad20 · 01/11/2020 08:55

I know it as a boys' name -not common, but not unusual to hear - and would spell it with an i.

This is an example of when I think 'different' spellings do nothing but add confusion, although I actually quite like it as a name for either sex.

Greyhoundgirly · 01/11/2020 10:09

Like others have said, curious as to whether this is a boy or girl suggestion...

CharityPecksniff · 01/11/2020 10:15

Sounds like a surname.
