Lucia - 3 questions!

I love the name Lucia... but have 3 questions!

  1. Neither me nor DH are Italian or have any Italian heritage. Does this make it weird to use this name for DD?
  1. How would you pronounce it? I know the Italian is Loo-CHEE-a, which I love, but I also really love Loo-SEE-a. I really dislike Loosha, as in St Lucia / St Loosha!
  1. We have a 2 year old niece already named Lucy. Is it just too close?

I'd pronounce it Loo-C-a because I'm English and don't tend to take on foreign accents unless I'm speaking the language.

RainbowsAndFrogs · 31/10/2020 21:10

I think it's possibly too similar if you pronounce it lu-SEE-a but the sound is different enough if you pronounce it lu-CHEE-a

Beautiful name

Kanaloa · 31/10/2020 21:30

I don’t think Lucy & Lucia are too close for cousins. My younger sister actually shares a name with one of my younger cousins, and several of my male cousins have my grandfather’s name. It doesn’t cause an issue with us.

I would pronounce it either as Loocheea or Loosseea. I prefer Loo-chee-a but have met a couple of both.

DoctorYang · 31/10/2020 21:35

The little girl I used to look after pronounced hers as Luce E Ah rather than loo see a.

pistolknight · 01/11/2020 02:23

Apologies I misread it as siblings. Cousins fine I think. I'd pronounce it loo-chee-a

FunkyFunkyBeat · 01/11/2020 03:03

I see Lucia and Lucy as the same name so too close in my opinion. Lovely name.

DramaAlpaca · 01/11/2020 03:06
  1. No
  2. LooSEEah
  3. No, it's similar but fine for cousins
Ghosts2020 · 01/11/2020 03:32
  1. No not odd, however I do know two Italian families who have daughter called Lucia both pronounced Loo-che-ah by Italian family and loo see ah by everyone else
2 pronunciation is a tricky one how we're you going to pronounce it? I prefer Lucia but I wouldnt correct someone if the said luchia and it was part of there heritage 3.it is slightly close but I don't think it's out of the question as its not entirely the same name depends how much you love it
TildaTurnip · 01/11/2020 03:44
  1. No-I think it is fine
  2. I have only heard the Italian pn before but like the Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish ones mentioned above. Loosha would not have crossed my mind.
  3. Absolutely fine for cousins. Although the non Italian pn are similar sounding to Lucy, they’re different in feel. Plus they’re cousins not siblings so it is alright anyway.
MercyBodle · 01/11/2020 05:05
  1. Not at all.
  2. I love the Loo-SEE-ah pronunciation too. You have to accept that there are 3 different pronunciations out there, and some people will assume one that is not your daughter's, and have to be corrected. If I saw this name I would ask first how it was pronounced if I possibly could. Not a reason not to use it though - I have a common name with one straightforward pronunciation and people still get it wrong!
  3. Your hardest question. It depends on a lot. I know families in which cousins have exactly the same name and it's not considered a problem. I think they are different enough in this case. I would however run it by the parents of Lucy to see how they feel, and be guided by that.
MimiDaisy11 · 01/11/2020 08:25

In Spain, where I first came across the name, it's pronounced closest to Lu-see-a, which is how I'd pronounce it.

Mousepad20 · 01/11/2020 08:59

My default pronunciation would be Loo-CHEE-a, but if that was corrected, fine. I know one who is not Italian.

Cousin thing would depend a little on pronunciation.

diddl · 01/11/2020 09:29
  1. No
  2. Lu chee a
  3. No
CaffiSaliMali · 01/11/2020 09:42

I have only met one Lucia of Italian origin so Loo-chee-ah. It's a lovely name and I really like it.

I think cousins Lucy and Lucia with Italian pronunciation is fine.

Lucy and Lucia pronounced Loo-see-ah is a bit too similar for me.

For example if my sibling had an Eve I wouldn't call my DD Eva with the Eve-ah pronunciation.

Palavah · 01/11/2020 10:04
  1. No
  2. Lu-chee-ah. It's more different from Lucy. Lu-see-ah isn't different enough
FazeleysRoyale · 01/11/2020 10:22

It reminds me of the book and film Room with a View where they call Lucy Honeychurch "Lucia" when she is in Italy. It's a pretty name, very obviously Italian and I would pronounce with a ch sound .

Chewingtoffee · 01/11/2020 16:28

Just call her Lucia and insist that it's pronounced the way you want it to be pronounced.

resm · 01/11/2020 21:36

I don’t think it’s too close at all if they’re just cousins. Who knows, the variations might be accepted as a family name down the line if reused within the wider family circle eg James/Jamie/Seamus etc.

MissMarplesHandbag · 01/11/2020 21:40

Fine for cousins.
Knew one, Italian. Pronounced Loo chee a. Prefer this.
Which, as others have said is distinctly different from Lucy.
It’s a lovely name.
