Too little women?

So have a Dd called Josephine, Josie or probably more commonly Jo for short.

Due DS soon and going through our shortlist of names. One on the list is Laurence, Laurie for short but occurred to me that we'd have named both our children after lead characters from Little women. Would people think this if hearing the names together and think it's a bit twee or am I thinking too much into it?

I made the connection but it's a lovely one.

diddlediddle · 26/10/2020 07:24

Absolutely love these two names, and they go beautifully together.

I wouldn't give the connection more than a passing thought and if it did occur to me, I'd think it was nice.

Ignoringequally · 26/10/2020 07:25

I’d definitely make the connection but it would make me smile in a good way!

MikeUniformMike · 26/10/2020 08:32

Too Little Women.

Heath Ledger was not actually called Heathcliffe.

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/10/2020 08:33

Overthinking, both lovely names.

Redlocks28 · 26/10/2020 08:35

I was friends with a girl at school year ago-she was called Jo (sephine) and her sister was called Beth-the mum was a huge Little Women fan!

Faynite · 26/10/2020 08:36

I would think Little Women, but I always wanted Jo and Laurie to be together!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 26/10/2020 08:44

Absolutely fine and rather a nice allusion for the people who recognise it. You could always use the spelling Lawrence / Lawrie if you wanted to reduce the association.

I vaguely know someone whose four daughters all have the same names as the early Jilly Cooper novels. It makes me smile whenever I hear their names. I don't know the family well enough to ask if it was deliberate and wouldn't want to cause offence in case it wasn't!

MimiDaisy11 · 26/10/2020 08:53

I think they're both classic names and there's a chance people could end up with that combo without being aware of the connection. It's not a book I've read. I really don't see it as an issue, but are nice names.

MimiDaisy11 · 26/10/2020 08:53

*both are nice names

ZebraKid71 · 26/10/2020 10:45

I'd make the connection immediately, I really wouldn't use them together. If you stick with Josie and Laurie I think that's fine.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/10/2020 10:48

If one is a boy, no one will think Little Women!

Eh? Laurie was a boy Confused

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/10/2020 17:58

Heath Ledger was not actually called Heathcliffe. Yes, they apparently didn't want to saddle him with the full whammy but my point was the Wuthering Heights connection is still obvious to me, but that I don't think it's a big problem (and Heath is a much less common name than Laurence). Jo and Laurie when said together would maybe cause some people to make the (unproblematic) connection, Josephine and Laurence wouldn't for most people I think.

Your name completely confused me because I thought it was me and didn't remember posting Grin
IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/10/2020 18:29

@ImNotWhoYouThinkIam - ha! I chose it as it's my favorite characters line in an obscure 90's TV programme but I'm sorry for the confusion Smile.

jessstan1 · 26/10/2020 18:35

Laurence (or Lawrence which is the correct spelling for a surname), was 'Laurie's' surname; his first name was Theodore - Ted.

Don't worry about it, it's a nice enough name.

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 27/10/2020 03:27

I came across sisters called Beth and Amy recently, and thought of Little Women. I would definitely make the connection with Jo and Laurie but not in a negative way at all. They are nice names.

Lemonsyellow · 27/10/2020 06:42

I think it’s fine. They are both classic nice names. The connection isn’t hugely obvious.

joystir59 · 27/10/2020 06:44

You could also consider Lorry as a less LW option

emilybrontescorsett · 27/10/2020 06:50

It's fine. If ds had been a girl both my dcs would be characters from Wuthering Heights.

Palavah · 27/10/2020 06:50

@RainingBatsAndFrogs

If one is a boy, no one will think Little Women!
You haven't read it, have you?
emilybrontescorsett · 27/10/2020 06:53

It's fine because the names aren't too 'out there,' unlike if they were called say Neo and Trinity.

aToadOnTheWhole · 27/10/2020 08:07

Laurence/Lawrence is a brilliant name Grin Little women is one of my favourite books ever. Most people wouldn't make the connection.

Just as an aside, my Lawrence absolutely refuses to be called Laurie. Point blank, from the moment he could form sentences "Am Lawens, not Lawwie" Grin

jessstan1 · 27/10/2020 12:55

Or Artic perhaps?
JuliaJohnston · 27/10/2020 13:09

Lorry?? Confused. Why?
