One of the only few boys names me and DH can agree on.
Is it too 'trendy' ?

Makes me think of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zander

Changedmynameagain1 · 24/10/2020 14:04

I’d go for Alexander and called him Xander for short

I’d def call him Alexander with xander as a nick name from birth.

My son’s called Alexander and we often call him Xander. Twenty years on, and I still love the name. Xand, , Xander, Alexander - they all look and sound gorgeous

Xander is very trendy unfortunately. It was not even ranked as a given name in the early 90's (so less than 3 babies a year were called it) but has been shooting up since then to be no: 176 in the boys names list in 2018 and its likely going to keep rising for a while at least.

It's a shame as Xander/Xan is my favorite of the Alexander nicknames (particularly over Alex - I've just met too many of them of both sexes).

However Alexander is definitely not trendy - it's stayed in the top 100 boys names since the 1900's at least and was the name of Kings and used by Shakespeare and other classic authors.

I think if you use Alexander on the birth certificate and but called him Xander from birth, most people would likely use that instead of Alexander or Alex (unless the child himself said he wanted to be called something else when he was older). It gives him options as an adult if Xander does become very dated.

I love it. Xander is the correct spelling too. If what pp said then it's unlikely he will be called Xander S or whatever your surname is at school

Yes. Xander isn't a stand alone name. It is nice as short for Alexnder, as is Xan. So is Xav (for Xavier).

I love it.
I do prefer it as a nn for Alexander but I think it would be ok to use as a stand alone name.

I love Xander. Personally, I don't understand the ' name him one thing but call him something else' brigade. If you lije the name enough to use it for your child, then that is their name , IMO. And yes, I did take my own advice. One of my dcs has a name that is more commonly a nickname. Despite what MNers often say about this practice, it has never caused a problem either at school, or now in a professional role.
@BunAndOven if you love the name, go for it. The Xander I know is mid teens now. In over 15 years working in schools, I have never met another. Even if it becomes more popular, I really don't see it overtaking the neverending stream of Jack, Charlie, Alfie, George etc.
