Is this an unusual name?

I had a DS in May, who we named Rory. A few months ago we took him to the seaside for a walk along the beach whilst the weather was nice. Whilst we were there an older couple (middle aged, probably 50s or 60s not elderly) approached and asked what our baby was called. The lady said “oh that’s nice. I could tell by the way you were interacting that he would have a strong but unusual name”.

It was a lovely comment and I often think of her, but I’m not sure I’d agree that Rory is unusual? I see it a lot on the baby name boards, although I don’t know a Rory in real life.

What do you think? Smile

I know quite a few of different ages. It's a lovely name.

MikeUniformMike · 19/10/2020 18:20

Yes, it is unusual, probably unique.

RemyHadley · 19/10/2020 18:20

I’ve only met one in real life. Maybe it depends where in the country you are? I guess there are a lot more in Scotland than down south.

confusedpombear · 19/10/2020 18:22

No i know 4. Not in Scotland. It's a lovely name that is on my list if I ever have a DS!

goldenharvest · 19/10/2020 18:23

I think its probably that it was less common when they were young. Not so much now. Know several Rory/Raurie/ etc

AriettyHomily · 19/10/2020 18:23

Not unusual. I know two, and a dog. All under 5, SE London

FelicityPike · 19/10/2020 18:24

No, it’s very common.

WatchTooMuchBelowDeck · 19/10/2020 18:24

In Scotland I know a few Rorys of different ages from 5 up 70ish, and lots and lots more when you take into account Ruaraidh type variations of every spelling.

It's a lovely name.

“I could tell by the way you were interacting that he would have a strong but unusual name.”

I wouldn’t take that as a compliment TBH.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 19/10/2020 18:31

It’s not unusual. It’s an ordinary - albeit lovely - name.

Whatsyourflava · 19/10/2020 18:32

Rory is incredibly popular and rising fast.
I know loads of Rory's .... and there's loads of Ro_ names in general around these days
It's unusual for her generation though I'm sure. That's probably what she was thinking of. I bet she'd say Noah and Theo are "unusual" too. Sweet.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 19/10/2020 18:34

It's Irish. But quite well-known in the UK too. As well as a family member of mine, I can think of, off the top of my head, Rory Bremner the impressionist.

I really like it.

PattyPan · 19/10/2020 18:36

I wouldn’t say it’s either common or uncommon. I have probably met 2 or 3. It’s just a normal name IMO - and a lovely one at that Smile

Roselilly36 · 19/10/2020 18:38

I love the name Rory, I would consider it fairly unusual.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 19/10/2020 18:39

I know a couple in varying age groups. It's certainly not common. Lovely name though

dementedma · 19/10/2020 18:39

Many here in Scotland - and lots of different ways to spell it too!

june2007 · 19/10/2020 18:44

Not that unusual but it,s decent and not soo popular that there is loads about. But I do think of Rory thee racing car.

jenniuol · 19/10/2020 18:52

Super common where I am, Scotland right enough. I know a few. And even more so, like a pp say with the different spelling. I was at school with several over the years and I’m 32 now and it still seems quite popular here.

Toebarb · 19/10/2020 18:54

I only know one, so I'd say fairly unusual.

Findahouse21 · 19/10/2020 18:55

I know 1 in his 20's

Tempusfudgeit · 19/10/2020 18:57

My husband is a Rory, it means 'Red King', as he likes to remind me!

Fink · 19/10/2020 18:57

DC's Catholic school in London (so a lot of Irish parents) has at least one Rory/Ruairi in every class that I've ever helped with. There are 3 in DD's class. Not at all uncommon or unusual. Maybe that woman hasn't got around much.

Savemyusername01 · 19/10/2020 18:59

I’ve never known one (teacher 30 years.)

SunshineCake · 19/10/2020 18:59

@CoffeeRunner

“I could tell by the way you were interacting that he would have a strong but unusual name.”

I wouldn’t take that as a compliment TBH.

How on Earth can someone tell what kind of name a baby has by the way his mother interacts with himConfusedHmm.
Kote · 19/10/2020 18:59

I would say it's not especially common but not unusual either.
