Different spelling

DH and I have decided to name DC2 Freddie but wanted a full name for the bc. After debating a few names we settled on Fredrik. After telling close family we’ve had a few comments on the spelling and that it’s strange to use the traditional Scandinavian spelling when we have no connection to that.

Our thought is that there are several ways of spelling Fredrik so even if we went with a more traditional spelling it wouldn’t necessarily mean that his name was always spelt correctly so we may as well go with the spelling that we love. What do others think?

It is a genuine spelling for the name. you like it use it.

FortunesFave · 11/10/2020 20:43

Honestly, I do think that you should put the name he's going to use on the BC. There's absolutely no point in using a more full name for the certificate because all it will do is cause confusion. I mean why bother? Just for the purpose of filling out forms?

One of my DC has a middle name which she hates. She's 16 now and always omits it on forms. Nobody's any the wiser.

It's on her BC and her passport and that's all. Freddie is also open to interpretation by the way...some people will automatically write Freddy.

Prettybluepigeons · 11/10/2020 20:44

I would spell it Frederick.

daisypond · 11/10/2020 20:57

Unless you’ve got any connection to Scandinavia, I think you should spell it the more standard U.K. spelling. But Fredrick and Frederick are pronounced differently. Definitely put something more grown up on the BC. I can’t imagine a grown man particularly wanting to be called Freddie.

MikeUniformMike · 11/10/2020 21:00

Just put Freddie on the bc. Much simpler. An unusually spelt first name will cause a lifetime of misspellings and questions about origin.

emilybrontescorsett · 11/10/2020 21:01

I would use the most common spelling, otherwise he is will always have to spell out his name which is a pain.

paintmywholehousepink · 11/10/2020 21:04

Fredrique?

MikeUniformMike · 11/10/2020 21:13

@paintmywholehousepink, why give the boy a girl's name?

Firebird83 · 11/10/2020 21:13

I would spell it Frederick

ParrotheadRedux · 11/10/2020 21:16

Come on OP, there IS an accepted spelling for this name in the UK. It will rarely be spelled wrong if you stick with Frederick. What’s the motivation for choosing a spelling that is not used in the region where you live?

DramaAlpaca · 11/10/2020 21:20

I'd go with Frederick on the BC if you really don't want to put just Freddie.

FortunesFave · 12/10/2020 00:16

Parrot I suppose OP just likes the way it looks. It's not that unusual to like a name from another culture. I liked the names Ineke and Femke when I was pregnant...they're Belgian I think. I didn't choose them as it would be odd to do so when nobody would know how to say them. I think it's a bit of hormone action myself. When you're pregnant you get funny ideas.

MimiDaisy11 · 12/10/2020 08:02

I think if you love it go for it. I don't think it will cause issues. People can see how to say it from how it looks. Personally, I would go with the most common British spelling of it.

MalorieSnooty · 12/10/2020 08:04

DS1 is Alfred, nn Freddie. Is this an option?

SimplyRadishing · 12/10/2020 08:07

I would spell it Frederick then you won't have an issue and it will be spelled correctly 99% of the time.

EriAndo · 12/10/2020 08:19

Frederick is awful - very Grandpa-ish
Put Freddie on BC

bigarsebelinda · 12/10/2020 08:21

There is a bit of an obsession atm with people having to find an alternative spelling to be unique.

Choose a lovely name like Freddie then go with the standard spelling. I wouldn't just put Freddie on bc though- gives the adult no options when an adult

I know of someone who called their kid Poppie. Why!?! The poor kid as an adult, is not only will have a toddler name but it will be continually misspelt.

bigarsebelinda · 12/10/2020 08:21

gives the kid* no options when an adult

bigarsebelinda · 12/10/2020 08:23

Jeez. I can't write properly this morning.

MercyBodle · 12/10/2020 11:32

I think Fredrik is fine. If that's the spelling you like then use it.

TeenPlusTwenties · 12/10/2020 11:40

If you aren't using the long name much, then I'd go with the common usage spelling and name of Frederick.

RuthW · 12/10/2020 14:53

Fredrik and Frederick is lovely. Much better to have a real name on the birth cert. spell it either way. Enjoy your little Freddie.
