When your surname is a noun....

theresaplaceforus · 04/10/2020 22:07

Does anyone else have this problem?
My surname is a noun...don’t want to actually write it out but it’s the general name for a winged animal.
I need a beautiful girls name and I do feel having a noun as a surname makes life quite difficult.

Geniveve?

Ikeameatballs · 04/10/2020 22:17

I think some surnames that are innocuous words can make for first name dilemmas.

Colours, eg Brown, Green, Smith
Nouns eg Bird
Surnames that can be first names eg Thomas
Adjectives eg Short

I actually don’t think Bird is too tricky

Lydia Bird
Daisy Bird
Marianne Bird
Chloe Bird
Felicity Bird
Molly Bird

Ikeameatballs · 04/10/2020 22:17

Not sure why I thought Smith was a colour!

Tillygetsit · 04/10/2020 22:45

3 syllables sound best I think. Just pick a few you like and hit us with them!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/10/2020 22:51

Lovely though it is as a name, never call your DD Iona if your surname is either a noun or could also be a third-person verb (e.g. Peters, Waites).

Heh1991 · 05/10/2020 01:29

Eleanor Bird
Sophia Bird
Beatrice Bird

I think it’s actually quite a nice surname and better than a verb (like mine!) which doesn’t fit with anything! X

I can also agree that a noun surname is much kinder than a verb surname!

I think as long as you avoid bird names (Robin might be a bit odd) you'll be fine!

jessstan1 · 05/10/2020 23:51

I don't see why you are concerned. My surname is a noun too and I've never thought about. I might have had I considered a noun for a first name but that never arose.

Most names would go with your surname, I think. Try them out and see.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 06/10/2020 09:27

Smith is the colour of fire, smoke & creosote.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 06/10/2020 09:38

Just don't use Wren, Robin, Crapofa or Iona and you'll be fine.

lottiegarbanzo · 06/10/2020 09:41

So long as you don't use Iona, Ophelia, an avian name or an adjective, you'll be fine Smile

lottiegarbanzo · 06/10/2020 09:47

Oh and anything that sounds like 'flip the...' so Philippa.

I love how you avoided typing the name (presumably to avoid the thread being searchable by any interested party) but lots of pp have marched in typed it out for you, repeatedly, to foil your plan!

clary · 06/10/2020 09:51

I knew a family with this surname and all their names were fine.

My friend was Daniel, he had sisters called Genevieve, Mirella, Valentina, and brothers called Gerald and Steve. All good.

A longer name is nice with a single-syllable surname IMO.

I think there are many more difficult surnames than yours Op! 😀

wishing3 · 06/10/2020 09:53

In exactly that situation, OP! Considered ‘Robin’ then said the full name together and realise sounds like theft of a —— ( insert our surname/noun)!

MikeUniformMike · 06/10/2020 10:58

Most names should go ok with it. Adjective type names might not suit, so Ruby, Scarlett, Jade, Amber, Olive etc might be best avoided.
Noun bird names - I'd not go there, so not Wren, Robin, Ria, Raven or Lark
Noun names in general, I'd avoid - and I'd include Jenny, Penny and similar

You might want to avoid Isabelle A. as first and middle names.

MikeUniformMike · 06/10/2020 10:58

or even Isabella.

DeliaOwens · 06/10/2020 15:30

I would avoid names like Violet, Lavender (purple bird anyone) and Avery (aviary bird) but Gabriella, Lydia or Judith all sound lovely with bird as a last name and will be sold adult names.

daisychain1620 · 06/10/2020 15:34

It might not be bird......

Blueuggboots · 06/10/2020 15:39

it’s the general name for a winged animal
In the OP?
More likely bird than Pegasus?

daisychain1620 · 06/10/2020 15:51

Lol I'm just being silly, was thinking Pterodactyl was a cool surnameGrin

Ellmau · 06/10/2020 19:04

Amaryllis

JMG1234 · 06/10/2020 19:31

I also thought Pegasus, not Bird....doh!

Our surname is a plural noun and yes, it did rule out one name, but other than obvious sayings/phrases, I'd feel free to be imaginative.

JayeAshe · 06/10/2020 19:34

OP's surname could be Batt ...

ErrolTheDragon · 06/10/2020 19:40

Or Dragon.Grin
